Jonathan entered the sitting room carrying a small bowl of popcorn that he had made that evening by himself. He gave some to Alex but the latter rejected it as he had no interest in eating. He brought out the children's books that Ashley had given him and set on working on them. This got Jonathan curious and amused at the same time. He looked at Alex.
"What is going on?" He asked him.
"I am reading," Alex replied bluntly.
"A child's book?"
"She said that it's good if I start from here." He answered.
"Wow. She's a great observer and a good friend to be with. Don't you agree?"
Alex was mute. He picked up his pen and started working on the exercises. Jonathan seemed pleased to have seen this because he had tried finding ways to make him study even though he really wanted to but unfortunately, he lacked the clues and ways to do so.
"I told you that there will be someone out there who is gonna care about your state of living," Jonathan said proudly. Alex stopped writing and stared at the floor through the transparent face of the center table that he was using.
She was being nice to him but that was less of his concern. He just wanted to learn and she was making it easier for him to do so. But Jonathan kept adding fuel to the fire each time, making him unable to concentrate as he read. After a while, Jonathan gave up and stood to leave.
"Tomorrow, we will both go to that place so you will have to forfeit your going to school. One's health is more important than anything else." He announced and disappeared.
Alex continued reading until it was late in the night before he prepared to sleep. Before he did, Ashley had forcefully collected his number the previous day and had added herself as his friend on all social media networks so it would be easy for her to contact him.
He scrolled through her videos on Tiktok and realized that she had a lot of followers. She was even verified as well. Mostly, she lip-syncs to the songs or parts of the movies that are being played. He watched her videos for a while...read her long notes of motivation before he finally switched off his phone.
He turned to his side and closed his eyes to sleep.

"Where is he? He didn't tell me that he was going to be this late." Ashley mumbled as she stood at the entrance of the class, awaiting Allen's arrival. Her teacher was going to be here in the next few minutes for their group report, but Alex had not arrived which was quite unusual for him.
"Is there any problem, Ashley? You look concerned." Sammie asked as she looked all over her friend wondering what could be wrong with her.
"Alex isn't here yet for our group submission" She answered.
"Oh, shoot! That's dangerous to your marks, girl." Sammie covered her mouth in surprise.
"Exactly my fear. His number isn't going through, and he refused to send a text, which could have been a lifesaver." She complained.
"This is bad...very bad. The teacher is coming though," Sammie informed her and quickly entered the classroom.
Ashley was frowning all through the teaching. How could he do something like that? When it was her turn to submit her project, he was nowhere to be found, and she could only provide it singlehandedly, causing her to lose a whopping five marks. The rest of the lecture felt as if she was walking through an iced stone because she couldn't focus on her studies and kept blaming Alex in her heart.==================
