"Amelia, do you think I look fat?" Yasmine kept turning in front of the mirror, checking every inch of her body which seemed to have changed drastically in such a short amount of time.
"I think you're eating well like a normal human being and it's showing on you," Amelia replied from inside the closet. "Where do you keep your shorts, Yaz?"
"That's just a nice way of telling me I've gained weight," Yasmine murmured. "They're in the second drawer on the left."
"Thanks!"
After working non-stop for two months, Yasmine finally got her first work-free weekend vacation and they were planning to head to the beach but now, with her summer body missing, she didn't feel like going.
"Stop whining and get dressed, we don't have all day." Amelia tossed her a white T-shirt.
"I look bloated Amelia... I've been looking forward to this trip but now-"
"But nothing! You look drop-dead gorgeous Yaz, trust me."
Yasmine smiled, feeling much more confident after her friend's words of encouragement. She decided to swap out her jeans sort for a flowy white skirt since she couldn't zip up the shorts all the way. "I'm ready." She smiled, feeling satisfied with her final look.
"One last thing," Amelia took a pair of sunglasses similar to her own and kept it on Yasmine's face, "now you're ready." She let out a wide smile, staring at Yasmine like an artist would their artwork. "Beautiful."
They packed snacks, fruits, drinks, and everything needed for their picnic on the beach, including the obvious; bikinis and sunscreen. By the time they were done, both bags were fully equipped to last them the day.
"It looks like we're packing a survival kit." Amelia giggled at the amount of goods they packed for just a day's trip.
"A trip with you calls for survival after all." Yasmine joked.
"Bitch." Amelia rolled her eyes at Yasmine and shoved her shoulder away. "I could say the same about you."
After checking their fits one last time the two left the apartment and got into Ameila's car.
"Are you ready?" Amelia asked, wiggling her shoulders and waving her car keys in the air.
"You bet!"
Yasmine was having a blast. The cool breeze and bright weather were just perfect for a day at the beach. Everything was perfect.
Laughing, chatting, and sticking her head out of the window while listening to SEVENTEEN songs was truly all she needed to get rid of the tension in her body the last couple of months. The little joys in life and the presence of those most precious to us go a long way when it comes to making people feel better... feel alive.
She occasionally got a bit embarrassed when five-year-olds from other cars stared at her like a crazy lady the way she was shaking her head to the beat of the music but she just laughed it off. They too would understand when they grow up and get to experience the feeling.
All of a sudden, amidst all the fun she was having, Yasmine started feeling nauseated and dizzy. "Stop the car."
"Why? What's wrong?" Amelia's questioning came to an abrupt halt when she noticed the pale complexion on Yasmine's face. She swiftly pulled over to the side of the road and hurried after Yasmine, who was doubled over in a secluded corner, retching and emptying the contents of her stomach onto the ground.
"Yaz, are you okay?" Amelia looked down at Yasmine with eyes filled with worry as she rubbed her back. "You don't look okay, should we go to the hospital?"
Yasmine found herself unable to muster a reply; the weight of her exhaustion made it impossible to even grasp the question directed at her. It felt as though the world was spinning relentlessly around her, leaving her feeling utterly disoriented and unsteady.
Amelia didn't hesitate for a moment. She sprang into action, gently assisting Yasmine back into the car and driving swiftly towards the nearest hospital marked on the map.
As she rushed Yasmine to the hospital, Amelia kept holding her hand and repeating, "You'll be fine, honey." With each passing moment, Yamsine's condition seemed to deteriorate, and it pained her not being able to offer anything more than reassurance and comfort.
Amelia paced the hospital hallway anxiously while Yasmine was being checked by the doctors. Her hands trembled as she vividly remembered Yasmine's body going limp in her arms just as they arrived at the hospital. It was scary to see her look so helpless and vulnerable, and Amelia had to muster all her strength to keep from crying. "I have to stay strong for her," she repeated to herself as she waited for the doctors to give her an update.
Yasmine finally came to after being unconscious for an hour."What happened?" She looked around the room with confusion written all over her face.
"You scared the living daylights out of me that's what happened!" Amelia exclaimed, feeling relief to finally see Yasmine awake after anxiously waiting for an hour. "You can rest now, she'll be fine." The doctor had repeated those words to her severally but resting was the last thing on her mind when her best friend was laying unconscious on the bed.
"Are you okay? Do you need anything? Water? Food? Juice?" She kept pumping out question after question, unsure of what to do to ease Yasmine's pain.
"I'm fine, just a slight headache."
"I'll go get the doctor."
Right before Amelia could leave to call the doctor, he walked into the room with a stethoscope draped over his neck. "I'm glad to see you're awake." He smiled at the two. "How are you feeling, miss?"
"I have a slight headache but other than that I'm fine." Yasmine flinched the second the cold stethoscope landed on her bare skin.
"Your heartbeat is steady now." The doctor remarked. "I'll prescribe you something for the headache and nausea."
"Do you know why she fainted, doctor?" Amelia asked, still not convinced that Yasmine was fine.
"In the early stages of pregnancy, it is common for women to experience symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, headaches, and even fainting. These effects are often caused by the changes that a woman's body undergoes as it adapts to the presence of a growing baby. It's important to understand that these symptoms are normal and are usually not a cause for alarm. However, it's always a good idea to check in with a healthcare professional to ensure that everything is progressing smoothly." The doctor recited the words as if he was reading through a script shoved into his face at gunpoint.
"Baby?!"
