{Narrator's POV}

Shadow clamped his hand around Sonic's wrist, blasting the communicator device into bits and pieces that were sent flying all over the place. Yellow sparks flashed over Sonic's hand as he let go.

"Hey! What was that for!?" Sonic groaned as he watched the tiny sparks emit from the communicator watch. It was damaged so bad that it quickly became inoperative.

Shadow uttered, closed eyes, with a grin to himself. "Your friends will only get in the way."

Sonic gave a sidelong glance at the ebony, giving a quick response. "In the way of what exactly?"

Shadow paused, realising what he would have revealed before quickly turning his head away from him.

After a minute of agitated silence, Sonic slumped further on the tree trunk, listening to the wildlife around them. The breeze was regular, quiet and cool. None of the two had anything to say at the moment.

Sonic rubbed the device on his wrist. Pieces of glass slipped off as he shifted them out of their places. The battle with Shadow must have damaged the device when he was carelessly fighting with him. "Meh," Sonic murmured to himself, unwrapping the device from his wrist and aimlessly tossing it into a nearby lake.

"I can't stay here any longer." Sonic heard Shadow speak. The dark hedgehog was standing back up on his feet, "It's time I go back."

"Back where?" Sonic's ears perked up.

Shadow suddenly turned from the sunlight, a fade of darkness veiling his stern features. The dark hedgehog knew the consequences if he made a bad choice. What could happen if he exposed Eggman? What would the professor do if he came back without a result?

After thinking of all the possibilities, Shadow rested his eyes, wiping out the rest of the world from his sight. And here, he spilt out the truth with his voice heard closely. "It's not far from here..."

Sonic's tired eyes briefly lightened up.

"Gems Lab. They've sent me to destroy you. It's embarrassing to say, but I can't bring myself to do it, not after the way you made me realise something important," Shadow said. At last, he could finally soothe the ache in his jaw, although the truth itself was bitter and was wounding his physical state of mind temporarily.

"Do you think you can take me there?" Sonic exclaimed, diving forward slightly.

Shadow peered at Sonic, hesitating for a moment.

"Come on, Shads, it's now or never—we gotta stop them fast!" Sonic reached forward and tugged his arm, however the dark one barely budged.

The black creature shook his hand off, reaching forward and laying a hand on Sonic's shoulder as a sign of his gratitude.

"You can't go there," Shadow uttered without further explanation.
During their first encounter, Sonic didn't seem like a bad person to him, but there was still little he knew about the blue gem.

He had only this minute to retreat.

"I must leave you here," Shadow insisted before he took a few steps backwards away from Sonic.

The blue hedgehog quickly turned, immediately knowing what he was trying to do. Watching, the Chaos Emerald sparkled into view on Shadow's palm. His shaky eyes lingered over the emerald.

"Wait! Shadow," Sonic called out.

Reluctantly, Shadow faced the blue one, listening for what he had to say. Sonic held back his tongue to re-consider his choice of words, and through his collection of thoughts, he uttered: "...Just know that I'll be there for you."

Shadow found those heroic words somehow enchanting to him. His eyelids lightly shut, a smile crossed his muzzle, a sign of 'see you until next time' when he opened his mouth to chant the word. Before Sonic could say more, Shadow chaos-controlled in a flash, and was gone out of sight. The white beams slowly faded, leaving only the tiny sparkles sprinkling on the spot.

The blue hedgehog froze, barely able to hold himself together at Shadow's departure. It all happened so fast. Sonic couldn't believe that Shadow had left him just like that.

Sonic started to run.

The trees swayed in the dashing wind, startling a few birds and causing those to rush out of their branches. Wet tears trickled wildly down Sonic's cheeks as he raced. Was it the feeling of a heart break?

"Gotta go faster!" Sonic mumbled, a mix of fury and sadness rushing in like a wave over his state of mind. Upon multiple attempts to get over his troubling emotions, droplets of tears seemed to upset him the more he reflected his actions.

What could he possibly have done wrong to make Shadow leave?
