While on a science expedition, two shiphands Dream and Sapnap find and capture a pair of the rarest sea creatures on the planet. Those two creatures are both desperate to escape, and they may have to put their trust in some of their captors to do it...
"So we will both be in the same tank?" I asked, feeling hopeful. Dream, the human, nodded at me, a small, cautious smile on his lips. This place was still awful, after what they had done to me and my best friend, but it got a tiny, microscopic bit better if I was allowed to be back with Karl.
My lips parted. I was going to thank him however I found the words catching themselves in my throat. It was polite to thank him, but even though he had done some nice things he was still a human, his species was still the reason that all of these bad things happened to me. I felt my face scrunch up and looked down.
The blond human was still there watching me, seeming concerned as I turned my head and began swimming laps around the small rectangle. “Are you okay?” He asked, worry written over his face. “I thought you’d… happy. You can be with your friend.” I didn’t say anything.
He sighed, studying me with a quizzical look as though he didn’t know why I would be upset at this moment. Yet at this moment I was still trapped in a box, my body was aching, and I was in a water that felt unnatural and gross against my skin. He was asking if I was okay? He was asking if I was happy?
I still didn’t look at him, eventually I just curled myself around with my back to the clear wall. “Hey please…” His words were muffled by the water and the wall between us. “Please look at me…” I ignored him. It wasn’t the most moody of moods, but I was just over him because he was asking if I was okay when I was being held captive.
“Are you feeling hungry?” He offered in a bid to get my attention. “I could get some salmon for you? Or I could find something else that you haven’t tried yet. If you want I could cook something.” Still nothing, I just stared towards the white and flicked my tail back and forth lazily, sending the warm water spiralling in its containment.
Sleeping with my back turned probably was not the smartest thing to do, since there was always the idea of never turning your back on a threat, yet I knew for now that Dream wouldn't attack me. Still I spared a glance back at him, seeing that he was still standing there.
The asshole… I stuck my tongue out at Dream, catching him off guard and watching as his eyes widened. Part of me was worried that humans didn’t understand what the action of sticking out a tongue meant, but from his shock he seemed to understand. “You seem a bit stubborn today.” He noted, and I continued to glare.
“So are you wanting anything?” He asked, and instead of looking towards him I slowly looked over to my tail, swishing it back and forth as it brushed against another one of the white walls. “Okay… you don’t want anything.” Despite coming to that conclusion, Dream still lingered to watch for a few moments.
I turned over and allowed my eyes to shut, feeling tired. My arms curled themselves together, my hands between my head and the floor in order to give me some form of comfort instead of laying against the firm base.
✨A few hours later✨
Something firm was against me, shocking me and causing me to contort and twist around in the water, feeling a shocked panic. The water was suffocatingly warm and I screamed out into the liquid, eyes widening as bubbles flew from my mouth up to the surface. I continued to thrash around, hitting every surface around me
The screech was a cry for help, but the words even couldn’t be understood as a mangled and desperate shriek. I knew where I was… I couldn’t comprehend it though… not in my panicked, newly awake state. My fingers, my mutilated fingers, scratched desperately at every surface that I could reach.
Dream POV.
“So… where are you from?” Sapnap asked, his finger tracing boredly against the glass. “I was born in the central seas… near a peninsula.” I don’t know why Sapnap asked him that, I mean how were we supposed to know what mermaids counted as the ‘central seas’, and what peninsula he could be talking about?
“Oh… cool…” The ravenette smiled. He was leaning over the grate, and the purple tailed mer was attempting to keep himself out of the water. “I come from Texas.” “Interesting.” Karl seemed disinterested, truthfully I probably wouldn’t be interested if the guy who captured me was asking questions and telling me about himself I wouldn’t care.
“And where is George from?” I asked, since although I did say that I wouldn’t answer questions it was a way to pass the time, and he didn’t seem to have a problem with it. “The northern seas.” Karl gave a small smile. “He is-” A loud shriek broke through the air, shocking all us and causing us to freeze.
Karl instantly began panicking. “George!” He called out, attempting to pull himself up. “That’s George! What’s going on! George!” He kept calling out, hands clawing around to try and pull himself out. “George?” The cries continued, and after glancing at Sapnap momentarily I began sprinting off in the direction of the cries.
“George?” I asked the mermaid, almost slamming into the glass at my speed. “What is wrong? What’s going on?” He was thrashing like an animal caught in a net, continuing to scream out. I wasn’t sure what he was doing, why he was freaking out. “Please… take a breath…”
That didn’t do anything, he didn’t seem to react to me and I wasn’t sure what to do, how to help him. He was deep in the water, freaking out over seemingly nothing. Not knowing what else to do I opened the lid, feeling cautious for a few seconds before moving to hold a hand onto his shoulder.
“Calm down… take a breath.” Was all that I could say to him, My hoodie was now soaked with water but I didn’t mind, pulling the mermaid up and holding him over the surface. My arms were under his, wrapped over his chest and feeling it rise and fall against me. All I could hope was that he wouldn’t bite me. ______________________________________ 1109 words
The position kind of doesn't make sense but this was how I imagined it looking (with my skills of drawing circles and triangles). The only difference is the tank would be bigger than it looks in the picture.
