Floating... Nothingness... All the same.

But today was different. Gamma felt it. Living inside a stasis chamber for over thousands of years does that to you.

Finally, a loud hiss penetrated his once dormant ears. Then the floating sensation disappeared and Gamma quickly found that the floor was NOT something you want to kiss.

He groaned and picked himself up.

Damn I sound hoarse. He thought to himself.

He looked around in hopes of rejuvenating a memory from his surroundings which came up blank.

The glass blocking Gamma off from exiting was removed partially. It got stuck halfway there for some reason. When I tried pulling it, it wouldn't budge. So I had to settle for squeezing through the tiny hole it made.

As soon as I had touched the ground outside of the pod though, a screen lit up with a scientist looking very tired and with the badge 'HEAD SCIENTIST' on his coat.

"Greetings, Gamma."

Gamma? That's my name. I think. He thought to himself again.

"If you're listening to this, it means you survived living inside a stasis chamber for a long time. A very long time."

"You probably have little to no memory of what's going on. Well, war is going on. We have damaged the Earth far beyond our repair and Mother Nature paid us her dearest wishes by letting us know we're all going to die."

Yap. Thought Gamma.

"So it is with you, Gamma, that we selected along with other speci- people to be one of the few to experience this feat."

"We have no idea what happened to the other people since contact with other surviving human groups is impossible."

There could be others? He pondered.

"To your right you will find supplies to last a year or two, and to your left some clothes. I send you my best condolences and wish you the best of lu-"

The scientist was cut short by a sudden boom rocking the bunker he was in.

He looked around and briefly left the camera on, allowing a view of the laboratory. He quickly came back with another person and noticed the camera was still recording so he ran up to it and quickly said his final goodbye.

"Our team has designed a 'buddy' to help you and be your companion, please treat him with respect and I wish you luck, Gamma. And please, for all our sakes, ensure this population doesn't mess it up like us."

And with that the screen flashed blue before disappearing.

"Took you long enough." Said a voice from behind him.

He turned to see a holographic cat walk up to me. Gamma regarded it with confusion.

"Oh." It said. "You don't know? I'm your buddy."

It spoke with an British accent.

"You're a cat." He said blankly.

"Yes. Well I can choose wha'ever form I want, I just happen to like this one." He spoke as if he and Gamma were drinking tea together or something. "The name's Pete, by the way."

Gamma didn't know what to say, he just looked awkwardly at the cat.

"Well then." Said Pete. "Shall we do a bit of exploring?"

He nodded and looked around. "Didn't they say I had food and clothes somewhere?"

Pete nodded and pointed his paw to Gamma's left where a door was. When he opened it, Gamma was greeted with rows upon rows of... Bars.
