Author's POV,
Alex woke up to warm sunlight peeking through the curtains, feeling only slightly better after a few hours of restless sleep. He checked his phone for updates and thought about Jonathan and Selena's visit to Victoria and Richard's mansion.
His heart raced when he saw a cryptic message from an unknown number, "Be cautious."
Frowning, Alex wondered who had sent it. He checked the number, but it was private.
Meanwhile, Jonathan and Selena arrived at Victoria and Richard's mansion, exchanging nervous glances as they approached the grand entrance. Victoria and Richard greeted them with forced smiles that failed to mask their underlying tension.
"Hello, Officers," Victoria said, her voice dripping with insincerity.
"Mr. and Mrs. Smith, we're here to investigate. Can you tell us about your relationship with Emma?" Officer Selena asked, her tone professional but probing.
Victoria smiled warmly, but it didn't reach her eyes. "Emma's our dear stepdaughter. She used to live with us before she moved out with Alex. We were a happy family until that psychopath patient gave her that creepy diary."
Richard nodded in agreement, his expression guarded.
"Have you noticed anything unusual about Emma's behavior before her graduation?" Jonathan asked, fixing his gaze on Richard.
Richard remained silent, and Victoria answered instead. "No, nothing. She was so happy on her graduation day," she said, her voice tinged with a forced cheerfulness that only heightened Jonathan and Selena's suspicions.
As they continued to chat, Jonathan and Selena couldn't shake the feeling that Victoria and Richard were hiding something.
Before their arrival, Victoria and Richard had been performing a dark ritual in the basement.
"Is there anything we should know, Miss Victoria? You seem a bit nervous," Selena said, narrowing her eyes at her.
Victoria's voice turned cold, her demeanor shifting. "I'm just concerned about Emma's well being."
Jonathan's eyes locked onto Richard's, suspicion simmering beneath the surface. "We'll uncover the truth," he said firmly.
Richard's smile returned, but his eyes betrayed his anxiety as he realized the officers were about to leave.
"We should go," Jonathan said, casting a wary glance at Victoria and Richard.
As they drove away from the mansion, the tension between them was palpable.
"Something didn't feel right," Selena said, breaking the silence.
"I know," Jonathan replied, his gaze fixed on the road. "Their alibis seem too perfect. And Victoria's nervousness was evident."
"Should we look into their past?" Selena asked, her brow furrowing.
"Already on it,"Jonathan said, pulling out his phone. "I've asked Alex to dig up anything suspicious."
Selena nodded, determination etching her features. "What's our next move?"
Jonathan's expression turned resolute. "We pay a visit to Emma's friends and see if they noticed anything unusual before her disappearance."
As they approached the next stop, Selena's phone buzzed.
"It's Alex," she said, her heart racing.
"What does he say?" Jonathan asked, glancing at her.
Selena's eyes widened as she read the message. "He received a cryptic message... 'They're closer than you think.'"
Jonathan frowned, anxiety creeping in. "What does it mean?"
Selena's voice dropped to a whisper. "Alex thinks it's related to Emma's case."
Jonathan tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "We need to protect Alex and find out who sent that text."
*Time Skip*
Alex found himself standing in a serene meadow, sunflowers swaying gently in the breeze. Emma appeared before him, her bright smile illuminating the landscape. Her hair danced in the wind, and her eyes sparkled like diamonds.
"Emma,"Alex whispered, his voice trembling with emotion.
She ran to him, and they collided in a passionate embrace. Alex wrapped his arms tightly around her small waist, holding her close as they swayed to an unheard melody.
"I love you, Alex," Emma whispered, her breath warm against his ear.
"I love you too, Emma. I love you so much," Alex replied, his voice cracking with emotion. "I will never let you go. I will protect you. You're my precious gem. Promise me you will never leave me," he said, still holding her tightly.
"I promise, I will never leave you," Emma said, tears streaming down her cheeks.
As they cuddled, the meadow transformed into a moonlit beach. Waves caressed the shore, and stars twinkled above them. They strolled hand in hand, their footsteps sinking into the sand.
Emma's fingers intertwined with Alex's, sending shivers down his spine. "Forever and always, my love."
"Forever and always," Alex echoed, his heart overflowing with love and hope.
Suddenly, Alex's phone pierced the tranquility with its shrill insistence. He jolted awake, disoriented and frustrated.
"Hello?"Alex answered groggily.
"Alex, it's Selena."
"What is it, Selena?" Alex asked, his tone flat as reality crashed back in.
"We've found some leads, but I need you to be careful. Victoria and Richard might be involved in Emma's disappearance."
Alex's mind snapped back to the present. Emma was still missing.
"Okay, I will be careful," Alex replied, trying to sound calm despite the dread pooling in his stomach.
Selena's voice softened, concern lacing her words. "Alex, I know this isn't easy, but we're doing everything we can. Stay safe and keep your phone close."
The call ended, leaving Alex staring into the darkness of his room, the weight of despair heavy on his chest. Tears pricked at the corners of his eyes as he realized the beautiful dream had just been a dream.
