You storm into your father's small office. Your mom had just told you that your dad was selling the business because it was going to go under, you had run all the way there to be at this meeting. Some businessman called James Barnes wants to buy it and you had to stop it. You couldn't let your dad's business go down the drain without a fight. Not when you had some money, not when you could help out.

The door bounces off the wall as you barge in, your dad's eyes are wide as you stand there panting hard. A tall dark dark-haired man turns, his beautiful pouty lips open in shock at the sight of you.

"You can't do this Dad, I'm begging you" You huff and puff, standing before his desk.

"Y/n, this is James Barnes. The man who will soon own the business" Your dad's tone is calm but he's glaring at you. You recognised that look, it was telling you to shut up and sit down.

You sink into the seat and turn to James, eyeing him up speculatively. He was really good-looking, mouth-wateringly so. Of course, he was smirking at you now because you were staring at him with one part annoyance and one part lust. You turn back to your Dad and ignore James.

"Dad, I have money. We don't need I sell to anybody" You try again desperately but your dad shakes his head.

James stands up and straightens out his suit with a smile. He holds out his hand to your Dad and shakes it.

"Let me know what you decide Mr y/l/n. I can have a contract written up when this... discussion is sorted" He nods to you and your father and leaves the office quietly.

"What the hell do you think you're doing, y/n?" Your Dad yells, his face turning purple.

"I'm trying to save what's ours Dad. You spent years building this place up and one hiccup and your selling?" You were getting angry, this was you father's legacy and he was so easily letting it go.

"Do you think I don't know that. That is doesn't break my heart to let it go. But I can't compete with some of the other companies out there, y/n. They are eating us alive. At least if I sell now, the business is still worth something and James Barnes is offering good money for it" Your Dad sinks heavily into his seat with a sigh.

"But Dad.." You try again but he holds his hand up.

"You're letting pride get in the way of what's right for this business" He mumbles and shakes his head.

"At least pride is good for something. You're just looking at the price tag on this place" You hiss and your Dad looks at you with anger.

"Yes, but not for the reasons you think. I don't want all those people out there" He points out his office window to the multiple desks full of people working hard. "I don't want them loosing their jobs because I'm getting my ass kicked by a competitor. Those hard working colleagues have been here a long time and this is all I can do to make sure they still get paid next week" His anger drains while looking at you.

"And you just barged in here and maybe messed up a deal that will save their jobs because of pride. Pride makes us artificial and humanity makes us real, Thomas Merton said that. And I would much rather be known for my humanity than my pride. And now I'm going to need you to swallow yours and go to Mr Barnes office and tell him we agree to his terms" Your heart pounds with every word your Dad said, he was right. Pride was eating you up inside at this loss, but he was even more right about making sure his people had jobs to come back to.

"I didn't think... Im so sorry Dad" You hang your head and wipe a tear away.

"Don't be sorry y/n. Just go make it right for my work family" He smiles at you and you get up.
