Seungmin was used to being alone at school. He wasn’t the loudest or the most popular student, but he was smart and hardworking. Despite his good grades, he somehow managed to rub everyone the wrong way. Maybe it was his reserved nature or the way he never seemed to care about fitting in. Whatever it was, it made him a target. Especially for one person: Changbin.
Changbin wasn’t just popular—he commanded attention. Athletic, confident, and always surrounded by friends, he ruled the school in a way that made him untouchable. And for reasons Seungmin could never quite figure out, Changbin seemed to have a particular dislike for him. The constant teasing, the mocking glances in class—it had been happening for as long as Seungmin could remember.
But things took a sharp turn when their English teacher paired them together for a project.
Seungmin sighed as the assignment was announced. Of course, of all the people he could work with, it had to be Changbin. He already knew Changbin wouldn’t do any of the work, leaving him to carry the entire presentation. After the first few days of trying to reach out to Changbin, Seungmin was fed up. They were falling behind, and he was tired of it.
One afternoon, Seungmin caught Changbin after class. “Look,” he said, trying to keep his frustration in check, “we need to get this done. We’re running out of time, and if you don’t help, we’ll both fail.”
Changbin leaned against the lockers, a smug grin on his face. “Why should I care? You’re good at this stuff, just do it yourself.”
Seungmin’s eyes narrowed. “I’m not doing it alone. We’re meeting at your place tomorrow to finish it.”
To his surprise, Changbin didn’t argue. He shrugged and mumbled, “Fine. Whatever.”

The next day, Seungmin found himself standing outside Changbin’s house, nervous and unsure of what to expect. The door swung open, and there stood Changbin, his usual air of arrogance toned down, at least for the moment.
They spent the first hour working on the project, exchanging few words except for the ones related to the task at hand. But as the silence stretched on, something changed. Maybe it was the fact that they were away from the noise of school or the usual crowd of friends, but Changbin seemed different—less sharp, less guarded.
By the time they met for the second study session, things felt almost... normal. They still weren’t friends, but the tension had eased a little. As they wrapped up the last part of the presentation, the atmosphere shifted again. Changbin leaned back in his chair, eyes studying Seungmin in a way that made him feel exposed.
“Do you ever get tired of it?” Changbin asked suddenly.
Seungmin looked up, surprised. “Tired of what?”
“Being the outcast,” Changbin said, his tone less harsh than usual, almost curious. “Everyone acts like you’re invisible. Doesn’t it bother you?”
Seungmin shrugged. “It’s not like I have a choice. People are going to think what they want. I’ve learned to live with it.”
Changbin was silent for a moment, then asked, “Do you like anyone?”
Seungmin blinked, taken aback by the sudden shift in the conversation. “What? Why does that matter?”
“I’m just curious,” Changbin said, his eyes never leaving Seungmin’s. There was something else in his expression, something Seungmin couldn’t quite read.
“I don’t know,” Seungmin answered, feeling awkward. “I don’t really think about that.”
Changbin smirked, though it didn’t reach his eyes. “Liar.”

Over the next few weeks, something strange happened. The more time they spent together working on the project, the less Seungmin found himself hating Changbin. And, surprisingly, Changbin seemed to drop the tough guy act around him. They were still far from being friends, but they talked now—real conversations about life, about the pressure to fit in, and about things that went deeper than their surface-level rivalry.
One day, after the presentation was done and they had no reason to meet anymore, Changbin stopped Seungmin in the hallway. “Hey,” he said, his voice low. “You busy after school?”
Seungmin shook his head. “No, why?”
Changbin hesitated for a moment before he spoke. “Come over. We can hang out.”
Seungmin wasn’t sure what was more surprising: the fact that Changbin was asking him to hang out or the fact that he actually wanted to say yes.
---
The more they spent time together, the more Seungmin realized that Changbin was nothing like the person he had thought he was. Beneath the arrogance and the teasing was someone just as lost as he was, someone who was tired of pretending to be something he wasn’t.
It wasn’t long before their rivalry turned into something else. They weren’t exactly friends, not in the traditional sense. But there was a connection now, something unspoken that pulled them together. They still kept up appearances at school, acting like they couldn’t stand each other. But when they were alone, it was different.
They found themselves seeking out quiet corners of the school, talking more and more, sometimes even sitting in comfortable silence. There was a thrill to it—their secret friendship.
Then one afternoon, something happened that neither of them had planned. They were at Changbin’s house again, the project long finished, just sitting on the couch. The conversation had slowed, and Seungmin noticed Changbin staring at him, something unreadable in his eyes.
“What is it?” Seungmin asked.
Changbin didn’t answer right away. Instead, he leaned in, just enough that Seungmin could feel the warmth between them. “I’ve been thinking,” Changbin said quietly, “about us.”
Seungmin’s heart raced. He could feel the tension building, the air thick with unspoken words. Before he could reply, Changbin moved closer, his lips brushing against Seungmin’s in a hesitant kiss.
It was soft at first, as if both were testing the waters, unsure if this was what they both wanted. But then Seungmin kissed back, and the hesitation melted away. The kiss deepened, and all the walls that had been built between them—years of rivalry, misunderstanding, and tension—crumbled in an instant.
When they pulled away, both of them breathless, neither knew quite what to say. But it didn’t matter. The look they shared was enough.
---
From that day forward, things shifted between them. They didn’t put a label on it, didn’t rush into defining what they were. But the secret glances, the hidden moments between classes, and the quiet afternoons spent at each other’s houses became something more.
They weren’t just enemies anymore. They weren’t even just friends. They were something in between, something neither of them could explain but both of them felt deeply.
In school, they still kept up appearances—Changbin teasing Seungmin, Seungmin rolling his eyes in annoyance. But behind the scenes, they were inseparable. It was a relationship built on tension, on years of rivalry turned into something much deeper.
And slowly, without even realizing it, they had started to date. It wasn’t official, and they didn’t tell anyone. But they didn’t need to. They both knew. When they were together, the world around them faded, leaving only the quiet moments they shared, the stolen kisses, and the warmth of knowing that, against all odds, they had found each other.
