(Author's POV)

Kael felt it the moment the relic's magic hit the battlefield. It was like a cold hand squeezing his heart, a darkness so ancient it seemed to crawl into his very bones.

His eyes flicked to Nathan, standing smugly at the edge of the fight, his hands raised high, the relic glowing in his grip.

"No," Kael growled, his voice full of fury.

Without a second thought, he summoned his powers, his hands moving in swift motions as he created a barrier around himself, Elara, and as many soldiers as he could reach.

His dark magic intertwined with the barrier, making it almost impenetrable—almost.

But the relic's curse was too strong. Even with all his power, he could feel it creeping in, pushing against his defenses. His body trembled with the effort to keep the barrier up.

Sweat poured down his face, his muscles screamed in agony, but he held on. He had to protect them.

He couldn't let anyone— especially Elara— fall to this curse.

But all his efforts were in vain.

The curse solidified, freezing the battlefield.

Everyone around them had fallen into an eerie stillness—except for them. Kael dropped to his knees, his strength drained, his vision swimming.
