Ch. 59: Dead Or Alive?

Everybody is in the Rec room trying to process what they just have been told

'Could a blood cause a heart attack?' Reb asks

'Yes, it can, and it can be life threatening' Mandy says

'I thought they fix the blood clot' Lizzie says

'They did, but even though they fix it, depending on how long it was unattended to, it can led up to heart attack or, like Mandy said, life-threatening,' Marie says

'I just wish they give us an update on Maxine' Bea says, then Officer Miles walks in

'Who has experience of doing surgery?' Officer Miles asks, as she walks up to everybody

Everybody looks at each other like what is going on

'I have, a couple of times' Marie says, everybody looks at her

'Oh, yeah, you removed my appendix before' Allie says

'I have a medical degree in college' Marie says

'Is there anything that you can't do?' Lou asks, Marie chuckles

'Ok, great, come with me' Officer Miles says

'Officer Miles, what is going on with Maxine?' Boomer asks
'The doctor is under investigation, and there's no doctors available at the moment, and since this is literally life or death, the Governor wanted to know if any of the inmates has a degree in surgery' Officer Miles says

'Alright, take me to Maxine' Marie says

'One other small problem, um some if the nurses don't want to operate on Maxine again, not because she's a inmate but because they are afraid of what might happen again' Officer Miles says

'Any volunteers?, don't worry, I'll show how to do things' Marie says

Kaz, Bea, Allie, Mandy, and Lou raises their hands up in the air

'Ok, we're all set, take us to Maxine' Marie says

Marie and them gets up, they leave with Officer Miles, while the others stays behind comforting each other

At the hospital, everybody is getting scrub up

'What do you want us to do?' Kaz asks Marie

'You and Bea are going to be helping me with Maxine, Allie you are on Maxine's breathing making sure she doesn't crash during the surgery, Lou and Mandy keep an on the monitors, make sure her blood pressure doesn't drop' Marie says

'I'm glad that you survived all of those bombs because without you, Maxine wouldn't stand a chance right now' Mandy says, Marie smiles

'You guys head in there, me and Kaz will be in there shortly' Marie says, everybody nods and goes inside the operating room

'Are you sure you want to do this?' Marie asks

'I just hope we do a great job because we know nothing about this, this is somebody's life that we are playing with here' Kaz says

'I know that but I have done this over five times, I have done a surgery like this before I know what I'm doing, I just need you guys to listen to me and everything will be fine' Marie says

'Ok' Kaz says

Marie gives Kaz a reassure kiss, and they head in the operating room, they see everybody standing around Maxine's body, Marie and Kaz walks up to them

'Alright guys, just listen to what I say, and everything will be fine' Marie says

'You have done surgery like this before, haven't you?' Mandy asks

'Yes I have, and the more we just stand here talking, the less of a chance Maxine has' Marie says

'Ok boss, what's first?' Allie asks

Marie tells everybody where to stand and how to do those things, Marie eventually gets started, it's about an hour into the surgery, and everything is going smoothly as plan

'We're almost there Maxine, just hang in there a little bit longer' Marie says

Then another hour goes by, and Marie is finally done with Maxine's surgery

'And we are done, all I have to do is stitch Maxine up and then we are done, great work everybody' Marie says

Marie stitches Maxine up and they clean her up, the other nurses takes Maxine back to her room and everybody walks out of the operating room and into the scrubbing room, everybody sighs in relief that is finally over with now

'I didn't want to say this while being in there but that blood clot that found earlier, they didn't fix it' Marie says, everybody looks at her

'So did they forget about it?' Allie asks

'I'm guessing yes because you can't forget about a blood clot like that' Marie says

'Was it in her breast or around her heart?' Bea asks

'In her breast, but it's been there for awhile actually, rather or not Maxine have in the hospital or not, she would have a massive heart attack and probably wouldn't survive it' Marie says

'So what do we do now?' Lou asks

'Now we wait and see if Maxine responds good to the surgery or not, you guys go and clean up, then go see Maxine, I'll be up there shortly' Marie says

Everybody cleans up and heads upstairs to Maxine's room, Marie cleans up too and stands in front of the window of the operating room, and images of just happened comes flooding in her head

'You gotta make it through this' Marie whispers to herself

She goes upstairs to meet everybody else in Maxine's room

It's been a couple of weeks since Marie did surgery on Maxine, she's still a little rough but she's getting better though, Marie and the others comes to visit her, Marie told her that she and the others perform surgery on her, in Maxine's room Marie is in there with her

'How come the hospital would let inmates do surgery on another inmate?' Maxine asks

'You know we all wondering that too, and we think it's because they messed up and they want some inexperienced inmates to do it, thinking that we have no idea what ww are doing, but we proved them wrong badly' Marie says

'You guys sure did' Maxine says

'But they are sending some other doctors over to make sure we did everything right' Marie says

'Hey, maybe they will let you guys do this more often' Maxine says, Marie chuckles

'I don't think they will but never say never' Marie says

'You know what?' Maxine asks

'No, what?' Marie asks

'Knowing that you guys operated on me, instead of those other doctors and nurses, I have felt at ease knowing that you guys were literally standing beside me, operating on me' Maxine says, Marie smiles

'That puts me at ease knowing that you were at ease too' Marie says

'I can't wait to get out of here and be back with you guys at the prison' Maxine says, Marie chuckles

'Well, enjoy this small freedom as you can because it's going to be awhile until you can again' Marie says

'Ok' Maxine says, she yawns

Maxine falls asleep due to the painkillers, and Marie let's her rest, she sits in chair and starts reading a book to pass the time
