The bonfire crackled, its orange glow flickering against the night sky. Everyone else had drifted off in groups—either to swim or head back to the house. But Steven and Taylor stayed, sitting on opposite logs, the air thick with unspoken words.

"You're really gonna sit there and ignore me the whole night?" Taylor asked, her eyes narrowing as she poked the fire with a stick.

Steven shrugged. "I'm not ignoring you. I just don't feel like talking about... whatever you want to argue about now."

Taylor let out a huff. "You're so frustrating, you know that?"

"Yeah, you've mentioned it a few thousand times."

There was a beat of silence before Taylor spoke again, her voice softer this time. "You've changed, Steven."

Steven looked up, his usual smirk gone. "What are you talking about?"

"I don't know. You used to be fun. Now, you're just... closed off. Like you don't care about anything anymore."

He shifted uncomfortably, glancing down at the sand. "That's not true."

"Isn't it?" Taylor's voice was quieter now, almost vulnerable. "Maybe you're just too busy trying to be this serious, cool guy to remember how to let loose. You used to be different when we were younger."

Steven chuckled, shaking his head. "Maybe you just don't know me as well as you think you do."

Taylor's lips pressed into a tight line. "Maybe I don't. But I liked the old Steven better."

For a moment, there was only the sound of the waves in the distance. Steven finally broke the silence, standing up and brushing sand off his jeans.

"You don't have to understand me, Taylor. You never did."

He walked off into the night, leaving her staring after him, her heart heavier than she'd expected.
