Flyers of university campaign had been up for almost two weeks and now the hallways were filled with counter booths filled with high-pitched, overly grinning women handing out flyers, luring those into their booths for the sake of being able to say to their boss that they'd "done their job".
Slumping my bag over my shoulder as I left the other strap of the backpack hanging by my hip, I stood by a booth and picked up their flyer. The flyer that contained a statue of a horse kicking its leg towards the air sideway, their slogan it seemed. The woman who looked like she was straight out of high school, probably only a few older than I was, greeted chipperly. "Hi, are you interested in joining our university? We have a great teaching program if that's what you like. What's your preference?" She asked me.
The future wasn't lost in my mind, but the question shouldn't sent shiver down my spine. Someone shoved me on my shoulder which turned out to be Faye, by her short figure it fazed me how her punch could knock someone over. "You're coming with me." Faye said and pulled me away from the booth, the woman had already moved on to the next student in line, which would be an all too ambitious sophomore.
"Where are we going?" I asked Faye, unlocking my hand from her grip, then walking in pace behind her as we passed by a group of guys goofing off on a bench in front of a classroom. The guys laughed and winked their eyes at us, whistling along the way, this was what dreaded me the most just walking up to a bunch of juvenile imbeciles.
Faye turned at me, but only for a second. "Seth and Lily are waiting. I feel like we haven't seen you in ages, girl." She stated matter-of-factly, a tinge of accusation pointed right at me. Faye wasn't the type to be jealous over small silly thing, which was why her long-distance relationship with a guy from the next town over, lasted this long.
"Yeah about that." I muttered lowly. Unlocking my phone and skimming over the text that Nellie sent about prepping for our Halloween costume, their annual thing to come to these events even if they weren't the one hosting it. "You have any costume ideas for Halloween?" I blurted out the question.
Faye stopped dead in tracks, looking over me. Her brows scrunched as she threw me a look of disdain. "Halloween? Since when do we care about those things?" From her tone that was raised than her usual soft-spoken nature, she was definitely onto me with that dagger-like shot right through me. "This is about your new group of friends, isn't it?" Check mate. Suspicion confirmed.
"They're not so bad." I argued, trying to open up a case that I knew she was going to win me over. "It's just that, they've been talking a lot about this thing... what to wear for Halloween and such." I showed my screen over to Faye, scrolling through the group chat that was still chimed with incoming new messages.
"Well," Faye mulled over, trudging down the stairs while the freshman guys were laughing too loud and pushing each other against the wall that one boy even got knocked over but soon enough recovered and joined the rest of his friends. "What look are you going for?" She asked, shaking her head at the group of freshmen.
I gave a shrug. "Please not another question. It was already hard enough that those ladies in the career booth ask me where I want to go." College was definitely the next step that I'd want to take after high school, but I couldn't help and wonder if taking a gap year would've been a better fit for me.
"Hmm." Faye hummed, skipping on her way out of the school, through the backdoor of the cafeteria. The rocky path leading up to an abandoned building next to the parking lot reserved for the students came in view. "Alright, come on, everyone's waiting at The Fort." The Fort was one of those abandoned building that my group and I stumbled on when we were doing lap for PE a long time ago. Since it was deserted and forgotten enough by the local, mostly known for its rumor going around of a lady who committed suicide right before the building was fully built, hence it'd been abandoned that even property agents had given up on selling out or doing any renovations, we decided throwing small decorations here and there, it'd be a perfect hide-out for when we felt like ditching a class or two.
