Greyson
"Who's your roomie this time?" Justin asks as haul my bag in the overhead bin and sit down next to him on the plane. I open the game-folder Coach Jared handed to us as we got on, looking for the page that has our travel information. Every away game we get one of these folders. It includes room assignments, travel itinerary, notes, statistics and other things important to the schedule. I scan the page with the room assingments, finding the right spot. "Greene" I tell him. "Who's yours?"
"Kingsley" he replies and I snort.
Whenever we have a stint of away games like this one, where we travel for nearly a week, Coach Jared mixes up our sleeping arrangements. It's an obvious attempt at making everyone know each other but sometimes I feel like he's just loves being a dick.
Louis and Owen sits down in the row next to us. On the plane, we get to sit wherever we want, but throughout the years the four of us have always sat together. I know being able to fly is a privilege, and the result of attending the best hockey program in the nation, but I can't imagine having to drive the entire east coast up and down to go to games. This way, we get to relax and enjoy travelling. Maybe that's the reason we are the best team.
Everyone takes their seats as Taylor, the social media girl for our team, takes a video down the isle. She's one of the media students at Oakwood and she runs the entire instagram account by herself. I almost turn my head when she walks past our row, but Christopher Levine's words about becoming 'more approachable' plays on my mind and I end up staring straight ahead instead.
"What the hell was that face?" Louis laughs when she gets far enough away. "You looked like you just found out your grandma died."
"That was my approachable face" I tell him and both Owen and Justin bursts out laughing.
"You're lucky your talented" Louis replies. I flip him off, giving him a sarcastic smile, "At least I am talented"
"You wish you had my talent, Carter" he blows me a kiss and before I can respond, the flight attendant starts talking over the speaker. They go through the usual information and we settle in.
I'm not a nervous flier. For me, it's just a mode of transport to get from point A to point B. If we go down, we go down, there's not much I can do about it. Besides, you get to relax and really get in the zone before you arrive. I close my eyes, putting my airpods in to listen to my favorite NHL podcast. They talk about the last weeks games and how they went and it's a good listen for when I want to focus without too much effort. Before I know it, we're in the air and the seatbelt sign has been turned off.
"Have you seen this?" Justin pokes my arm. I open my eyes to see his phone in my face, showing me an article from one of the biggest hockey news stations in the country.
That's weird. They usually don't cover college hockey, at least not before the championship in April. They even mention the link between Lennon, her father and me and although they deny it, and I doubt she reads this anyway, I don't want her to think there's any truth to it. Especially now that we're finally back on good terms.
