the morning that rose, ruby woke up rather early, it was still pretty dark out and only the slightest trace of the sun coming up.

she didn't get up immediately, but she was forced to when she heard a clatter. she immediately sat up and looked down at her knife.

she didn't grab it just in case it was nothing and just a pan that fell over, she pushed past her curtain and slipped out of her door with ease. the air was still and quiet.

the feeling of a presence watching her, spooked her yet she didn't show any emotion. she turned to see nothing. just the mere shadow of the night.

she walked towards the cafeteria but stopped when she heard rustling. was it a rat? a raccoon?

she turned, and slightly peaked over carls door, he also had a blanket hung up for privacy, so she pushed past it just the tiniest bit and saw him with a flashlight reading his comics.

she let out a silent sigh. she knocked on the door quietly as to not wake anyone else up.

carl, inside the cell was afraid his dad had caught him. he mentally winced and pushed his comics and flashlight under his pillow and stood up.

he put on a sleepy demeanor and moved the curtain, he looked up expecting to see his father but surprisingly he looked just a bit lower to see the familiar ginger haired girl.

he let out a breath, once he saw ruby his lidded eyes went back to normal and so did his demeanor. ruby pursed her lips. he opened the door for her and she just barely closed it.

"you scared me. i thought it was a raccoon or something." ruby said quietly with a small smile. he turned his flashlight off and put it down. he sat across from her as if they were 5 year olds being sneaky at night.

they were both in their pjs. he was wearing a blue long sleeve and grey sweat pants and ruby was wearing light blue plaid pj pants and a white tee shirt.

"why are you even awake?" he asked, ignoring what she said earlier. she rolled her eyes. "can't sleep.. i guess." she shrugged.

he looked around for a second and met her questioning gaze. "i have an idea!" he spoke, a bit too loud though. she shushed him.

"shut up! we're gonna get caught by your dad." she said and he nodded his head in agreement.

"sorry." he said in much more quieter tone. "let's go outside." he said with a mischievous smile.

ruby looked at him with a confused expression. outside? in the middle of the night?

"really?" she asked, as if in shock he would even suggest that. he nodded. "yeah let's go." he said and stood up and so did she.

"wait i need my shoes!" she said and he waited outside her cell as she put on her boots. she finished and they both put on a hoodie since it was always chilly at night.

they open and closed the door as quietly as possible, hopeful not to get caught. they successfully made it outside to see one of the tower lights lit up.

ruby assumed it was glenn and maggie since they slept in there, but what were they doing?

they ignored it and just assumed that was the way they fell asleep and they just walked and talked about whatever. the way kids should.
