chapter fifty-four cobra kai never dies
╚════════════════. .❀.╝
WITH THE WEIGHT of the world off of her shoulders, Alyssa could feel herself going back to normal.
Obviously, she hadn't bounced back right away. She could still feel the stress of the Sekai Taikai dawning on her, just in a different way. Kwon's death still happened to play on repeat in her head, reminding her of how quickly something could be taken away. And UCLA still hadn't sent her any messages regarding her application, which only built on her stress.
Despite that, anyone who truly knew her could see that her spark was beginning to get ignited again. That glint in her eyes was shining bright, and her smiles didn't seem so forced anymore. She wasn't secluding herself as much as she used to, and — huge news — she was actually getting some sleep. Probably in part because she wasn't training so much, but mostly because she wasn't so stressed out all the time.
Speaking of training, the entire dojo agreed that they would help train Tory and Miguel for their final fights. But it wasn't going to happen in the Miyagi-Do backyard, not this time. Since they were Cobra Kai, they had to train at Cobra Kai — which meant going back to the original dojo at the strip mall, where it truly all began.
Alyssa had driven Eli and Robby over there, some training supplies in her backseat. Once they arrived at that strip mall and she parked his car in the front, Alyssa immediately got hit with a large amount of memories all at once. She got out of the car, glancing up at the familiar sight. She remembered driving her and the two boys there after Miguel's fight against Kyler. She remembered sitting in this parking lot, holding a crying Eli, when he told her he wanted to flip the script. And, the most prominent one, she remembered her fight with Eli here after he attacked her and Demetri at the mall, where the two of them truly fell out for good.
"Hey," Robby called, gaining her attention. "You good?"
Alyssa looked over at him, giving him a small smile — this time, it reached her eyes. "Yeah, I'm good." She shut her door and locked her car. "Let's do this, yeah?"
She walked up to the door, holding it open for the both of them. Robby entered first with his crutches, and Eli followed after him, holding a stack of wooden boards that they could practice with. She entered behind them, letting the door shut as she took in the sight. Sensei Lawrence was wearing all black, and Tory and Miguel were wearing the white Cobra Kai gi's. Sam and Sensei LaRusso were already there as well.
And then Alyssa's eyes went to the wall — the wall. Even though it was covered by grafitti, the words STRIKE FIRST STRIKE HARD NO MERCY were still completely legible. She took a quick look at her boyfriend, a sudden rush of affection entering her body. When he had started here in this very room, he was that shy kid who only wanted to learn how to stand up for himself. Sure, Cobra Kai had turned him into the worst person imaginable and he became a grade A asshole, but he came out on the other hand. Seeing him back in here felt very full circle.
Training got started right away, and those who kept coming in the door joined without being asked to, just because they wanted to help. Alyssa held up boards for Tory and Miguel, watching as they broke them apart with ease. They then moved onto sparring, and she watched as Eli and Kenny went against Miguel. Eli really did hold his own, and so did Kenny, but Miguel managed to win in the end. Alyssa and Sam also went against Tory. Now, usually, Alyssa and Sam were a force to be reckoned with — two birds of a feather. They even had the matching bracelets to prove it. Yet, something must've snapped within Tory, because she fought with new vigor and beat both of them.
After a couple hours of that, they decided to disband — mostly to give their captains some time to rest. They slowly trickled out, but Alyssa, Sam, and Tory stayed behind, at least just for a few moments. She had promised Eli she wouldn't take too long since she was his ride home, but she knew that he was probably bound to be a little more understanding this time. (At least she hoped.)
"My dad learned this in Okinawa," Sam announced. "It's sort of a last resort."
"Is there a counter to it?" Tory asked.
"Oh, don't bother asking her that," Alyssa voiced. "She'll just say ask the drum."
"Haven't you three gotten your fill of training for the day?" Mrs. LaRusso questioned.
"Hey, if you love karate, you can never get too much of it," Sensei LaRusso argued. "Unless, of course, it's the night before a title fight. You want us to give you a lift home?"
"Uh, no, that's okay," Tory responded. "Uh, Sensei Lawrence and Robby are gonna give me a ride. But thanks."
"Okay. It's a big day tomorrow, so try to get your rest."
Mrs. LaRusso paused when they started to walk out, and Alyssa stopped as well, glancing back to see Tory with a conflicted expression on her face. "Everything okay?"
"Yeah," Tory said. "I was just thinking about the first time I came in here. Sparred with Miguel and made friends with Aisha. Then met Sam at the beach club. It's been a strange couple of years. The toughest in my life. But also kind of the best. And when I think about the good parts, a lot of them are because of you guys." She looked to Mrs. LaRusso. "You helped me get back into school after all the shit that I pulled on Sam." She looked to Sensei LaRusso. "And you let me join Miyagi-Do, no questions asked. And then I bailed on you right before the tournament to fight for Kreese. And now Sam and Ally are teaching me the advanced moves of Miyagi-Do. No one besides my mom has ever shown me that much kindness. So . . . thank you." Tory sniffled a bit. "I don't know what I did to deserve it."
"Well, I'll tell you what you did. You took every punch that life threw you, and you kept fighting. Sure, I didn't always agree with the way that you fought, but . . . we all make mistakes. Even me, some would argue."
"What matters is how willing we are to acknowledge those mistakes and how we move on from them," Sensei LaRusso added. "And you've done that better than most people." He glanced over at Alyssa and Sam. "You all have. So, yes, you absolutely deserve some good in your life."
