It was an evening like no other, one that, despite all the chaos we'd fought through, felt calm, almost peaceful.

The Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei had just wrapped up a light-hearted meeting, where we'd shared laughs, tricks, and celebrated the fact that, for the first time in decades, we weren't enemies anymore. The rivalry between Scorpion and my clan had never seemed to end, but after all the bloodshed and betrayals, we finally stood as allies.

I smiled at the memory of everyone getting along, especially Scorpion and Kuai Liang, whose stern demeanours had softened a little over time.

I found myself walking beside Kuai Liang, my dear partner - known as Sub-Zero. I still couldn't get used to seeing him so happy; for years, his burden had weighed him down, but now, there was something lighter about him. Something warmer, even in the frigid air we both breathed in.

"You're quiet tonight."
I teased, nudging his arm playfully.
"Thinking about what we talked about with Scorpion?"

He gave me a sidelong glance, and for a moment, I swore I saw a flicker of something. Maybe it was pride for his brother, or perhaps something else.
"It was nice... to see them getting along. It's been a long time coming."

"Yeah."
I agreed.
"It was nice to talk with him again, too. It feels like we're on the verge of something good... for both our clans."

Kuai Liang nodded, but something in his expression shifted again, almost imperceptibly. He opened the door into his room, making room for me to walk in first. I did as he intended, leading him to walk in after me and close the door behind him.
"I'm glad to hear that you're going to help Scorpion train the Shirai Ryu's elite."
He said, his tone strangely measured.

I blinked, surprised by the way he'd phrased that.
"You're not worried, are you? I mean, I'll be training both clans together, but you know I'll always make sure you're involved when you can."

His lips curled into a faint, almost teasing smile.
"Oh, I'm not worried. Just... I might miss you."
He paused, and I could see the hint of a playful challenge in his eyes.
"Seems like you'll be busy with him and his warriors. Shouldn't you take a break first? You've been working too hard."

I chuckled.
"I suppose I have, haven't I?"
But I could tell there was something more he wasn't saying.
"Why? Are you jealous, Sub-Zero?"
I asked, lifting an eyebrow with a playful smirk as we walked up a bit closer to his bed.

He tilted his head, giving me a look that made my heart race a little.
"Maybe just a little."
He said, his voice dropping low, almost as though the coldness around us could suddenly melt.

Before I could respond, he moved toward me, his arm wrapping around my waist as he pulled me gently into him. My heart skipped a beat as his chest pressed against mine. He wasn't usually so forward, but tonight felt different. Tonight, everything seemed lighter, like the weight of the past had somehow been lifted.

"You've been running around helping everyone else."
He murmured, his voice so calm, but his presence so overwhelming.
"You should take a break with me. Rest, even if just for tonight."

I hesitated, realizing he was right. The stress had been building up for weeks, and I hadn't really given myself the time to breathe, let alone relax.
"You're right."
I finally admitted.
"I haven't exactly made time for myself."

He smiled then, a rare, soft smile that always made my chest tighten.
"Then let me take care of you. Tonight, it's just you and me."

He sat down on the bed, looking up at me and with a gentle tug, he pulled me toward him. I stood in front of him, my fingers brushing against his chest. The chill of the night air seemed to fade away as I looked into his eyes. We didn't need words anymore; everything was spoken in that quiet, shared understanding between us.
