Fear surged through me as I realized I was no longer in the maze. My eyes become weak from squeezing them shut. I took a slow breath and relaxed my eyelids and I suddenly became uncontrolled of my body. Thousands of images were flashing behind my eyelids, voices and pictures rushing so fast I couldn't move. I couldn't breath nor open my eyes until it stopped. It was like a switch had flipped and suddenly I was in control of myself again. My eyelids flew open and I gasped for air. Dust tickled down my throat, I coughed while I still struggled to feed oxygen into my lungs. I sat up from my position on the ground and saw no men I heard of before. I crawled up from the warm concrete floor and scanned the room.
There was a heat that filled the room up with humidity and formed beads of sweat below my hairline. All walls were covered in faded, peeling wallpaper expect for one. That one wall was entirely covered in a giant mirror reflecting my tired features. I was in new clothes, not like the ones in the maze, and my hair was neatly braided into two.
I stared into my reflection, I felt like I have never seen myself until this moment. I noticed a slight blotch in the mirror. It was sort of like a crack that was slowly creeping, and spreading throughout the rest of the mirror. It looked like the mirror was growing veins that then started turning into a clear white colour. It then turned black and it no longer reflected anything. I walked up to it and pressed my hand upon it. A bolt of electricity surged into my skin and threw me to the other side of the room. I looked upon my hand and blisters already forming. Blood started to ooze and the pain kicked in. I wept in pain and called for help, but I knew I was put here and I was not going to get help. I ripped off a piece of my t-shirt and wrapped it around my hand, which soothed the pain immediately. I sighed in relief and relaxed my back against the wall.
I sat there with my head hung back trying to recall what got me here but nothing came to mind. I thought about how much time it has been since I've been out of the maze and all the other girls. I closed my eyes to try hoped for them to be okay. Then I heard the voices again, no, these were girls voices. It was Harriet's, and Sonya's! I jumped up and looked around me expecting them to be here, safe. But it was the same since I closed my eyes until I saw the mirror slowly change.
It was slowly turning bright and molding shapes. It stretched out from the wall slowly coming towards me. I stood pressed against the wall the hot air radiating through my body. I stared at the molding shape that now was in a shape of a woman. The shape suddenly split from the mirror and turned into Harriet. I was too shocked to say anything but I felt relief spread through me cooling me a little from the heat. Harriet was heavily panting and wet with sweat.
"Aren't I glad to see you here," she breathed out.
"I could say the same," I smiled.
Harriet returned the smile for a second but then returned to her piecing glare, the moment was then replaced by my curiosity.
"Why are you here?" I asked.
"We got told you'll be here, we had to come get you before we move onto our next part of our mission." Harriet said while walking towards me. She walked behind me and stood next me looking into the mirror, which had turned clear and foggy.
"Have you seen yours yet?" Harriet asked.
"Seen what?"
"Your tattoo, we all have one."
Harriet turned around and showed me the back of her neck, it read 'Group B, the representative'. My head spun from confusion.
"Group B? What does this mean?" I asked.
"It means we aren't the only group, there's another group, group A."
Newt immediately came into my head; maybe he was in group A.
Harriet continued, "The second one says something about us, our role. That's why I have to see yours."
I nodded and turned my back to Harriet, "what does it say?" I asked quite eagerly. Options ran though my head of what it could say scared of it exposing something untrue about me.
"Group B, the bait," Harriet said.
All these reasons ran though my head to what that could've meant but it the fact that I lead Harriet to me seemed to be the reason. Before I could say another word, a figure started molding through the mirror again. The same process when Harriet came though. The girl that materialized was someone I didn't recognize. She had dark black hair and eyes as blue as sapphire. The girl then spoke, "we need to go now, the flat trans has appeared."
Harriet looked at me and spoke in a deep and rushed manor, "you need to take a bow that outside this room and follow our league. I told you our first part of our mission, now you need to help us with the second part. Just aim at the boys, your our best shoot so it comes down to you if something goes wrong."
Fear flowed through me again, I had no idea what was going on, for all I know it could've been a trap, but I have no where else to go so I decided to go along with it. Harriet took my hand and led me to the mirror. The new girl jumped through the mirror with ease.
"Your turn," Harriet pushed me forward.
I stumbled forward and looked back at Harriet. I feared getting hurt again but I had no choice. I jumped into the mirror and felt like I was swimming in wet sand. I landed in a bunch of sand as heat and light hit me like never before. I felt the same way as I had felt entering the maze. I looked up and saw the rest of group B looking at me. I saw a figure running towards me. She blocked the sunlight that caused me to shape and recognize her face.
"Shauna!" I spoke out; I got up and collapsed into a hug. Shauna pulled away and handed me a bow and a quiver full of bows.
"Nice to see your still alive Melisia," Shauna said.
"You too," I said as a smile kept up on my face.
"Everyone into positions!" Harriet shouted.
Everyone started to form a circle around potholes that were in the ground. Shauna led me to one next to her.
"Raise your weapons, remember our aim, think about freedom," Harriet shouted.
I saw everyone prepare their weapons. I scanned the crowd and spotted Yuko staring at me with her bow. She nodded her head as I raised my bow just like Harriet said to do. I noticed that many girls were missing.
"When I get to one I want everyone to step into their potholes alright?" Harriet took a large breath, "three...two...one!"
Some hesitated and some went right for it. It was just one step and everyone sunk through the holes. It was only me left, I held my breath and stepped forward. It felt like nothing, but a few seconds after I felt my feet on a sandy surface and found the courage to open my eyes. It took a bit to adjust to the light; I couldn't hear any sound but a slight buzzing. I could see the outlines of people in the middle of the circle. As my sight adjusted I could make out that they were boys, but one stood out. It was him, the one that I have seen. The one I have dreamed of seeing again with no explanation. The one I had once wanted to live to see again, now standing before him with my arrow aimed at him, just a flinch of a muscle that could obviate him from my world.
