Chapter eight, in which Newt seems to be on his man period.
The night was calm. And after what happened, too calm. Percy tossed and turned in his sleep. The thought of Grievers in the Glade, well, Percy didn't want to think of that. They were terrifying enough in the Maze, let alone out in the open. So once again, another sleepless night. More than once, he woke up screaming from nightmares.
Morning was even worse. He was tempted to ask for a day off, despite him being a Runner for only a day. The other Gladers were also restless. Frypan had burned part of breakfast, so a chunk of Percy's toast was charred black. Newt was swearing more than usual, and even Gally shut up and watched the walls intently. Everyone seemed to be on their toes after the Griever incident.
Minho was very vocal on the situation. "I say we take on the Grievers. Fight fire with fire."
Others objected. "We've established a peace with the Grievers. Why give that up after two years?"
Many people nodded at that. But Percy was sure. The only way out of the Maze was to defeat the Grievers. Even Minho had said so. There was no way out. All they could do was run around pointlessly.
Percy worked up the courage to go up to Minho. "Hey uh, Min Min-- I mean Minho! Yeah Minho. About the Grievers...."
The Keeper wasn't impressed. "What do you want Greenbean?" He asked stubbornly.
"I was thinking we take them on. But we lay low for now, collect materials, stuff like that," he babbled. His plan didn't sound so great when he said it out loud. Anything to take a day away from those bloody Grievers. Maybe he could figure out who the girl was. There were only guys in the Glade as far as he knew.
"Shank, please tell me you're kidding me," Minho sighed.
Percy shook his head. "Uh, no. I'm serious! It's a good idea. Strike when, uh, the Grievers don't expect us to?" This was going downhill so fast. What was he going to do now?
After some mumbling, Minho looked at Percy. "You can take the day off. I know that's what you want. Check in with Newt. He'll give you something to do." And with that, he walked away.
Well then. That went better then Percy anticipated. He walked over to Newt, who was yelling bloody murder at some Gladers. He glared at them, and they glared back. He waved at Newt. "Uh hey, Minho sent me to--"
"PERC I'M BLOODY BUSY TRYING TO EXPLAIN TO THESE DEAR SHUCK FACES WHY BLOODY SACRIFICING ONE OF US IS NOT GOING TO HELP," he bellowed. Percy put his hands up and backed away, while the Gladers he was yelling at rolled their eyes.
Once they were gone, Newt turned to Percy. "Okay shank, what can I do for you?"
"Minho sent me here. I got the day off," he said.
Newt thought for a moment. "Oh why not. Medjacks today. They're just checking in on the girl. Should be easy peasy."
He perked up at the mention of the mysterious Glader girl. This was really his lucky day. Or was it the calm before the storm?
