Jonah son of Amittai - Jonah 1:1
- 2 Kings 14:25

"He restored the territory of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the sea of the Arabah, according to the Word of the Lord. God of Israel which He had spoken through Hos servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the prophet who was from Gath Hepher." - 2 Kings 14:25

"And each man said to his mate, 'come, let us cast lots so we may learn on whose account this calamity has struck us'. So they cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah." - Jonah 1:7

"The lot is cast into the lap, But it's every decision is from the Lord." - Psalm 16:33

Now why would the people of Nineveh listen to Jonah's warning and turn from their evil ways?

Background check on Nineveh.
- Capital of Assyria.
- Current day Iran.
- Gentiles.
- Worshipper of Ishtar.
Dagon - the fish god.
Nanshe - the fish goddess and goddess of prophecy and water, daughter of Ea.
- Merciless in battle
- Enemy of Israel.
- Dangerous territory for Hebrew.
- Wicked and evil ways.

God had mercy and gave them an opportunity to repent.

The Ninevites already worshipped the fish, water, and when a man appeared to them out of the water from the belly of a fish with a prophecy of " repent! Or be destroyed" they found no reason to not believe it.

They believed in the Lord God of Jonah, the God who sent them the messenger. They turned to the one true God and repented for their sins.
