"You are out of instructional control. Please report back to your unit" The monotone voice repeated in my ear. I hated that sentence, it made me feel weak, it made me feel controlled.
I didn't want to let them think they could control me, I hated listening to them, but there was nothing I could do about it
I walked back to my unit cursing under my breathe as I made my way to the small white building, and stuck my finger on a black pad after wiping it down once. my finger was sprayed with black ink to show I had been to my unit
"Scanning" the robotic voice said, as a small dot spun around the screen.
My name was projected onto the screen
"Welcome, Anna Novum. Have you been listening to the instructions given today?"
"No" I responded while staring at the streets as people walked back and forth between buildings.
"Would you like the instruction booklet today?" The voice asked.
"No"
"Would you like me to say them aloud?" it asked
"Sure" I said yes because I learned that weather or not I said no, I would have to sit there and listen to it anyway.
"Number one. Always remain under instructional control.
Number two. If you disagree with the instructions given, the elders will be notified and you will be punished accordingly.
Number three. Anytime someone has broken a rule, please notify the elders. Or else you will be punished also
Number four. All work MUST be finished before the end of the day in order to retire to your sleeping courters"
I never listened to the rules. I already knew them all, but i still hated the robots voice. I still hated that it had no emotion.
I walked away with a casual look on my face even though I was angry.
Everyone stared at my black thumb. They knew that it meant I wasn't listening... Again. People looked down on me as they walked by, knowing that I was rebeling in some way. Almost nobody got the black ink on their finger, they just learned to listen, but I didn't
