Abe's appointment with Dr. McArthur went well. "The baby is growing like a weed. I would guess it is around four, possibly four and a half pounds. We still can't tell for sure whether you are having a boy or a girl," she announced. "You look wonderful as well. I hope you have been taking it easy."
Marc smiled at the woman. "She'll tell you that she is, but I'm not so sure."
"Well. Even so, the two of you are doing an excellent job. The baby will still probably come early. So, the same restrictions are in place." She looked at the chart. "There are almost seven weeks left until your due date. Given the fact that we don't know when your baby will actually come, I am going to recommend that you receive the FPol shots. There are two shots that must be given no sooner than twenty-four hours apart. They help the baby's lungs develop. If the baby does happen to come early, it would have a much better chance at survival and will be less likely to need to spend extended periods of time in the NICU."
Marc nodded and looked at Abe. "Do we need to do that here? Or, in Montpelier?" he asked.
"If you'll be in town until tomorrow afternoon, I could give the first shot immediately. Then, you would need to come back to my office and get the second shot tomorrow around this time."
Marc looked at his watch. It was almost noon. They had a 1:30 appointment the next day at the dealer to pick up his new truck. He nodded. "That sounds great. What do you think Abe?"
"Will we have time tomorrow?" she asked.
"Yes. Our appointment isn't until 1:30 at the Southe Towne Auto Mall. If we're a little late, they'll just have to understand or lose a sale."
"I can get you in and out quickly. It shouldn't be a problem to get to your other appointment," Dr. McArthur added.
"Then, let's do it," said Abe.
The doctor gave Abe the shot. Abe winced. "All right. Unless you have any questions, I will see you tomorrow."
The couple met Jon in the lobby. He looked uncomfortable. "All these pregnant women in one place make me nervous."
Marc laughed. "Let's go to lunch."
"That's the best news I've heard all day," joked Jon.
Abe was pale as they climbed into the truck. "Are you okay?" asked Marc.
"A little queasy," she admitted.
"Maybe it was the shot."
"Probably."
"Do you still want to go out for lunch?" Marc asked.
"Yes. Besides, I want to see what Matt says."
"Me too," said Jon.
Marc chuckled. "Well. Let's get going then."
They arrived at the Olive Garden just as Matt pulled up. Marc approached the hostess counter. "Table for six please."
"There will be about a thirty minute wait today. We are unusually busy," she informed him. He nodded and took the pager from her.
"Why six?" asked Abe.
"We need someplace to put these hats while we eat," Marc told her playfully. She laughed and shook her head.
After they were seated, Jon asked, "So what did he say?"
"Who?" Matt asked with mock innocence.
"Don't make me kick you under this table," Jon warned, pointing a breadstick at his brother.
