The difference between a hero in a book and a real life hero isn't the amount of tragedy they undergo. It isn't the storyline all too much, either. No.
The difference is that when reading a story, the reader sees a hero, but in real life, all that they see is another face in the crowd, another person on the sidewalk, with no heroic backstory to their name. Therefore, heroes do indeed walk among us.

But wait.
Who this hero may be differs between people.
What do you struggle with in life?
Does this affect what you view as a "heroic figure"? Indeed, it does.

What we love in a person enough to label heroic is how they share common problems with us but overtake their troubles to support the greater good, throw themselves selflessly aside for the sake of others, and hold incredible strength, enough to get them by.

That is what a hero is.
