Present day.

"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Maya, Happy Birthday to you!"

My eyelids fluttered open and I was met with the sight of my parents standing over my bed holding a giant cake with lit candles. I grinned and sat up on my elbows to blow the candles out. They flickered out slowly and my parents cheered, placing the cake to one side and revealing a stack of presents.

"Come on get dressed and meet us downstairs for present time!" Mum leaned down to kiss my forehead and they shuffled away, closing the door behind them. I rolled over and reached for my phone on my night stand, seeing a message from Luke sent at midnight exactly.

"Happy 17th Maya!! Can't believe you're already 17 and we've been friends for nearly 11 years. plz never change and stop aging now. I can't wait to see you later and I hope you have a brilliant morning, love you always, Luke xx"

"Cringe! but thank you, love you always too xx"

"Could have been worse, could have done a photo montage of baby photos or something xx"

I chuckled and slid my phone across the night stand before standing up and throwing my dressing gown on.

The doorbell rang and I skipped over, revealing a very tall Luke holding a stack of presents. "Oh wow, Luke what did you do?!"

"Only 17 once right?" I smiled at him and took the stack from him, placing them down on the table by the door before throwing my arms around him in a massive bear hug. "So, what's on the agenda today?" I stepped back from him and smirked.

"You're not gunna like it...."

"That's fine."

"I want to get something pierced." He grimaced and shifted nervously. "Okay...then what?"

"I want to go to a party and get drunk." That made him more nervous and he chewed his bottom lip. "Are you sure? I mean last time..."

"Last time was different, Michael won't be there this time." It stung a little to say his name but I had decided in order to move on, I needed to accept that he will be around, and I will see him and I will have to talk about him sometimes since we dated for over a year.

Luke nodded and stepped back so that I could move past him and we could go get pierced. His eyes landed on the presents. "Is it okay if I open them later?"

"The birthday girl does as she pleases." He smiled at me and I giggled, leading the way to the piercing shop.

When we arrived Luke stood at the threshold looking in as I walked over to the woman. "Hi, can I get a nose piercing please." She nodded and looked past me to Luke. "What about you?" I was about to clarify and say it was only me getting a piercing but Luke spoke first. "Lip please." I spun round to face him with my jaw hanging open. "Wh....what...?" He smirked at me and stepped into the shop tentatively. "You don't mind do you? If i invade your special day."

"N...no...not at all but I thought..." He chuckled and cut me off, "I've been thinking about it for a while, thought it would look cool."

I sat in the chair and watched as the lady prepared everything. She let my pick a stud, and I chose a boring silver one with a twisted back while Luke chose a black ring. He watched me as the woman pulled out a needle that looked a lot like an injection but longer and I reached out for his hand. He chuckled as I squeezed it hard and shut my eyes. The needle struck me and I could feel my eyes watering under the lids, so I opened them and looked up to the ceiling trying to avoid looking at it.

"Maya, you okay?"

"I'm not crying my eyes are just watering."

"Right done, next up." I hopped off the chair and stood in front of the mirror admiring my nose. It looked pretty damn cool, even if I did say so myself.

I turned back to face Luke and watched as his face grew paler when the woman pulled out a clamp. I laughed, "Not so funny when it's the other way round." He nodded and I held my hand out for him, which he took in a heartbeat and squeezed me pretty hard.

I watched as the needle went though his lip and he winced. But within a few seconds the ring was in and she was done. He walked over to the mirror in a few quick strides and smiled at himself. "You look good." His eyes looked over to me in the mirror and he smiled brighter. "Thanks, so do you."

I stood outside on the pavement waiting for Luke and realised I still hadn't opened his presents yet. I was about to go back inside when I heard a high pitched whistling and I turned to face the source of the noise.

"Wowey wow wow look at you Maya!" I smiled and looked down at myself. I'd chosen a midlength black dress that was low cut and pretty much skin tight and accentuated all my curves in all the right places. I'd paired that with some black strappy heels and was feeling myself. Jack grinned at me. "I guess you're going somewhere nice for your birthday then?"

"Well, I wouldn't say nice, just a party."

"Have a drink for me then." I watched out the corner of my eye as he walked away and turned back to look at me before he reached his front door. I wasn't a particularly confident person but for once I felt good about myself and seeing Jack's reaction only made me feel better.

As soon as Jack had disappeared into the house, Luke emerged and didn't say much as he looked me up and down. "Maya...you...wow..." I laughed. "That good hey?" He blushed and I swatted at him. "Don't be silly come on let's get wasted."

We had only walked down the road and I was already regretting my shoe choice, but I didn't want to say anything to Luke otherwise I would get a sarcastic comment. But by the time we were still 10 minutes from the party I was limping and hobbling behind him. He turned around and sighed.

"Okay okay please don't say anything. I know I did a stupid thing." He chuckled and took two strides towards me before turning around and lifting me on to his back. "Now you can arrive in style." I laughed and held onto him for dear life as he walked me the rest of the way on his back.

He dropped me at the front door of the party and I wobbled, trying to not wince and complain before even starting the night. As soon as we were allowed in I went straight to the drinks and picked up what I could find, not even looking at the Vodka from fear of vomiting.

"Maya, Happy Birthday!" I froze, recognising the voice.
