Loud, aggressive honks came from outside the window. And then yelling, loads of F-bombs. I looked at the corner of my screen, my dry tired eyes blinking a few times to read the time: 3:17. In the morning.

Go to sleep Sadie. Just a few more minutes, I promised myself in the glow of the screen. This is how I'd spent almost every night since we'd moved to Boston. In with my grandma after dad skipped town. I told myself I was going to sleep, and then I opened my laptop on my stomach, and opened the browser even though I said I wouldn't search for him.

But just like every other night I typed his name into the search bar, and read page after page, searching for him. Trying to figure out if he escaped Allerdale Hall. If he escaped Crimson Peak. I searched Cumberland. I searched his first name, his last name, his full name:

Sutton Lewis Chatterton, III

I found his birth record and his baptismal record. But that's not what I wanted. I didn't need evidence that he was born. I knew he'd existed. I wanted proof that he had died. That he had made it out of that hellhole. That my father hadn't killed him for helping us escape.

And then a notification popped up. An alert I'd set. It was for a book. The title was:

Spiritual Warmth: An Analysis of Spectral Attraction

My heart skipped. Even when I read the title in my head it was in Sutton's voice. I heard his accent. I clicked the digital cover open and flipped past the title page, and then my heart nearly stopped:

These pages along with every page ever written by these humble fingers. Every note collected. Every question ever asked is dedicated to my bone princess. All my love from the past. - Sutton

The End.
