Chapter 3
CoveOps. That's one word I love to hear. But it's a class even more exciting when boys are in it and it's probably because you get to know those boys all at the same time as going on a field mission. When Bex pulled up the van I darted inside with J, Livy, and Marcy. "Girls, don't forget about your visitors!" Bex yelled and J rolled her eyes at her mother. "Jillian, I saw that." Bex said, smirking at her daughter from the rearview mirror. I stifled a laugh and waited for the boys to climb in and sit across from us. But they didn't. They sat in the aisles between us. Or at least the four of them did. Jim sat with Jessica. and disregarded us. Fun. I turned to face my visitor, Charlie. "So, Charlie. How do you like our school so far?" I asked him. "It's cool." He said without looking at me. I rolled my eyes. Wow, how rude. I shared a look with J and she rolled her eyes, reading my mind. "Okay, kids. What you're doing today is," "Bex! Watch the road! You're driving on the left again!" I yelled at J's mother who started to talk in her thick English accent. Bex swerved and smiled back at me. "Thanks, Ally. You sound just like Cammie." I smiled at her. That was one of the best compliments ever given to me. Charlie looked up at me with a confused look but I disregarded him. "Anyways, aside from my bad driving habits, we will be seeing and watching today with partners. Ah ah ahhh, Jill and Ally, both of you already have partners." I exchanged a look with my three best friends and knew we were all thinking the same thing. Bex was trying to torture us. "And girls, remember. You have one hour."
Climbing out of the van and walking around Roseville was fun until it all hit me where I knew Charlie from. It was from a CoveOps mission over the past year.
~flashback~
J and I decided to split up just to cover more ground. I felt someone watching me, following me but I didn't try to lose them, I just let them follow. I was getting ice cream when I turned around and completely walked into a boy I didn't know, getting ice cream all over his shirt. "Oh my god! I'm so sorry, here" I grabbed him a napkin and wiped the ice cream off of his shirt. "Thanks, but that wasn't necessary." he whispered. I only smirked at him, knowing this was the person that was tailing me all day. "Of course it was. Now why don't you tell me why you were following me all day instead of just asking me out?" I asked, which was code for "why were you tailing me?" He replied with the simple gesture to himself and said, "Spy." I rolled my eyes and the flashback ended.
"Charlie, why don't we go get ice cream?" I asked. "It's on me." He nodded and I led him towards the ice cream place. "Our cover is that we're two kids in love. Just go with it." He whispered in my ear as he slipped his hand into mine. I suppressed a smile and nodded. I felt Josh's cold stare on my back and our intertwined hands and I only smirked to myself. I paid for the ice cream and pretended to stare dreamily (not completely pretending) at Charlie as the ice cream guy handed him our ice cream cones. The comms unit in my ear buzzed with J's voice. "Ally, you know that wasn't just a fake dreamy stare." I groaned and J laughed. "Don't worry, I won't say anything." I rolled my eyes because technically she had just let Grant know that. And all the people on the comms unit. Which was everybody. Charlie smiled down at me, that I-know-something-you-don't-know smile and I suppressed a grin. Instead, I giggled and waited for Bex to pipe up in my ear. "Ally, there's a man behind you wearing pins down his tie. How many pins are there?" Bex asked. "17," I replied without missing a beat or turning around. Bex just moved on to asking another person questions. I was there to enjoy myself, more than to be on a mission. "So Charlie, looks like we keep running into each other. I find it a little, /distracting/." I said, putting emphasis on distracting. He only quirked that smiled of his and didn't say anything, he just walked along beside me and held my hand.
He was holding my hand.
My hand.
Charlie.
Was
Holding
My
Hand.
Holy crap! I tried to keep my groan from escaping my lips. I did not want to fall for Charlie. I didn't. It just wouldn't work. He always seemed full of secrets... "Charlie, you just passed a shop, what was in the windows?" Bex's voice rang through my ear, tearing me away from my thoughts. "Dresses." Charlie answered. "Alex. Ally, Al!" I turned to see someone call my name. It was my ex boyfriend Daniel. "Um, hi Daniel." I said, faking a smile at him. Nothing was more awkward than being there with a guy you barely knew and your ex. Just then, his friend Sarah came running up to me. "Ally?" She squealed and hugged me. I hugged her back, "Hi Sarah, it's good to see you too," I said, laughing as we both pulled away. "So who's your friend?" She asked, inquiring a whole different question. "Oh, this is Charlie. Charlie this is Sarah and Daniel, they're friends of mine from outside of school. I met them last year." I turned to Charlie and he nodded. "So, Charlie, where are you staying?" Daniel asked roughly. "At the school." "I thought it was a girls only school...?" Sarah asked. "It is, but we're doing an exchange program with Charlie's school." I piped up, and Charlie's hand slipped into mine. "Ooh. So Ally, are you and Charlie together or..." Sarah started to lead on but I shook my head. "No, we're just friends." I replied and I heard Daniel grumble something like, "yeah, right." Sarah elbowed him in his stomach. "Hey, we've got to go, see you at the big game on Friday?" Daniel asked and (for some reason) I nodded. The two of them walked off and Charlie stared down at me. "Why'd you tell them that you'd see them at the game?!" "Not just me, you too smarts." I sneered back, ripped my hand out of his and stormed away towards the fountain where Daniel and I share our first kiss. I sighed as i sat down. "Hey Gallagher Girl, look. I'm sorry if I upset you." Charlie said, sitting next to me. I sighed. It felt like I've known him forever. I rested my head in his shoulder and he smirked that I-know-something-you-don't-know grin. I rolled my eyes and walked toward the truck, my internal clock telling me it's been an hour.
Charlie followed me and I swung the door of the truck open. But nobody was there. I ran to a disguised car of ours but nobody was there either. "Great, we have to walk back." I said and Charlie decided to follow. "Well this'll be nice. We'll get to know each other." Once again, there was that I've-got-a-secret smile on his face and I tried my best not to role my eyes. "Okay, what do you want to know?" I asked as we started the two-mile walk back to school. "Everything. From your favorite color to your deepest, darkest secret." He whispered. I tried not to laugh. "Not the last part but everything else. My favorite color is blue, I love love love everything Disney, I like to read sometimes, I'm a pavement artist, I'm shy sometimes but completely crazy any time else." Charlie nodded. I could tell he wasn't even listening. "And what about you?" I asked. "There's nothing to know. I'm a spy and that's it." He shrugged an kept on walking as I stopped open-mouthed. "C'mon, I'll carry you the rest of the way if you want." he suggested. I jumped on his back and he carried me the whole way back.
As we walked through the doors, the whole sophomore class was waiting for us. "You're late." Bex said as we sat in the hall. "Sorry, we kind of had to walk back. I didn't want to take another vehicle from some poor guy waiting for his date." I shot back and Bex only smiled. "Good, Alex. Good. There's no need for you to get hasty, you are exactly on time. Except you are not alone." I looked over at Charlie. We were supposed to ditch out partners? Oops. I wouldn't have ditched him. I mean the guy carried me back to school for two miles!
