Dating one of the NHL's most notorious partying womanizers wasn't how you envisioned your life to be at 22. You'd just graduated from the University of Dallas with a degree in Economics and Finance, and had gotten a job at a non-profit organization, so you didn't have a flimsy and carefree lifestyle.

You didn't even really know how you managed to let it get this far.

You two weren't official; Tyler just introduced you by name whenever someone asked who you were, and the looks that people gave you made you uncomfortable. You were just one of the at least five other girls he was seeing-all "unofficially".

"Why do you let it go on?" Maggie, your best friend, inquired.

You sighed.

"I dunno. I guess when it's just the two of us-I really like him. He's funny and charming, and actually really nice."

"Then when there are others around?"

"He's not mean, but it's different. I dunno. It's like no one takes me seriously. But I can't say that because we're not an "actual" couple."

Maggie shook her head.

"I don't get it. I mean seriously, you're not stupid. You have a degree and a job and don't go to bars every week; then what does he do? Chase skirts and chug scotch?"

"And play hockey..."

Maggie rolled her eyes.

"Whatever, you know what I mean. He doesn't have a real job or a degree or anything. What's going to happen with him when he's done hockey?"

"He won't answer that. I've asked him."

"Exactly. See? He's not thinking for the future, which means nothing in his life right now actually holds any meaning, including you."

You sighed. That thought had crossed your mind more than once. But then he'd pick you up for a date and have all the right words, that you couldn't bring yourself to bring it up.

"I guess."

"I'm not trying to make you feel bad, but he's still thinking like a teenager, meaning he deserves to be dating someone like him. Not someone with a real job and head on her shoulders."

"I guess..."

"So you should drop him. Seriously Y/N. You're just gonna get into trouble. How would it look on your charity if he got into trouble? With his lifestyle, it's bound to happen sooner or later."

Now you could only shrug. Maggie leaned forward.

"You need to get rid of him."

You sighed.

"We're meeting for coffee after work," you began. "Speaking of work, I need to get back. I'll talk to you later, yeah?"

"Let me know how that conversation goes."

That was at the forefront of your mind the rest of the day. You could barely focus on the budget and estimates you needed to make for an upcoming fundraiser, but managed to get it finished by the time four o'clock rolled around. You decided to walk the few blocks to the coffee shop, and as you walked up, you spotted Tyler through the window.

Unlike most times, he wasn't on his phone or watching the people go by. He alternated between looking at the ceiling and the table in front of him. He was biting his lip and bouncing his knee, something you found strange. He was smooth and confident-today he looked nervous.

Well, at least I'm not alone in that, you thought as you pushed the door open and walked in.

Tyler didn't even look up. You got in line, keeping one eye on him while you ordered from him and yourself. He didn't even look up until you sat down in the chair across from him. Then he smiled at you.

"Hey you made it," he greeted.

You smiled, sliding the cup across the table to him.

"Yep. Made three wrong turns but I got here."

He laughed.

"Well, that's good. And thanks."

You shrugged, looking down at your coffee.

"We need to talk though," you began slowly, looking up for a minute.

His brown eyes melted a little bit and you bit your lip, forcing out the next sentence.

"I can't do this anymore," you whispered.

His face fell, and he was about to talk but you shook your head.

"Look, you're a nice guy, it's just-it's been two months and there's no sign of any commitment, I can't waste my time anymore. I know you see other girls, which is fine since we don't have a relationship, but if this is how it is then I can't do it Tyler."

He said nothing, but looked a lot more upset than you'd been expecting. Finally, he looked at you.

"I-I um, I asked you for today because I wanted a relationship with you," he whispered. "I cut the other girls off last week, and I don't miss them at all. I know I have some maturing to do but...these last couple months I have been thinking more, cuz you've forced me to."

You blinked.

"Wait...what?"

"I like you Y/N, a lot. More than a lot. And like I said, I'm still really immature, and I know that, but I'm working on it. And I want to work on it with you."

"You-Tyler..."

"So...will you be my girlfriend?"

You were in shock. His eyes searched yours, and he reached across, taking your hand in his.

"You're asking me-you-"

"I'm asking you to be my girlfriend and make me the happiest man in all of Texas."

"That might be a stretch."

A small smile pulled at the corners of his lips.

"Well, Dallas for sure."

"In that case-absolutely."

He grinned, leaning forward and kissing you.

"You have no idea how long I've been freaking out over this moment," he told you.

You smiled.

"Well, you don't have to freak out anymore."

He smiled, squeezing your hand.

"And I'm glad."
