When out from nothing
I emerged: a soundless whisper,
Empty shell;
When all my cries were void
Of words,
Of will,
Of meaning,
Quis sum ego?
When I began to stand
My ground, to say
“I’ll do my will.”
And tried to read
And learn
And hear
To keep my passions still,
Quis sum ego?
When I was forced
To choose my path:
My duty
Or my heart;
When I impressed
My footprints on the shore
To guide the young,
Quis sum ego?
While on the bridge to cross
From an old world to the new,
When my time has come
And gone –
Reached the point
Of no return,
Quis sum ego?
Who am I?
