Archibald Colston: The wise and dutiful son, Archibald had hoped to form an advantageous match to save his family from financial ruin, but a rejected proposal brought him to his better senses. He sold his family estate and with all his father's debts paid, moved himself, his mother and sister to London. With the keen advice of his American friend, Harry De Rosier, Archibald was able to make several fortuitous investments in the American marketplace with the money left over from the sale of the country house. After the first windfall of good fortune in a long while, Archibald then decided to move his family to a place where they would have access to even further opportunities to better their lives — New York City.

Olivia Colston: The demure and dutiful sister of Archibald Colston, Olivia spent the first eighteen years of her life in preparation to be presented to the finest circles of English society. She'd hoped to make a sensible match that would make her family proud and earn her a comfortable life of security. But months before she was set to be presented in the royal salon, her brother decided to wrench her from the society she was so familiar with, to stake a claim in the enigmatic, and often capricious, elite of New York society. Olivia is determined to dislike everything to do with New York City, including the vexatious crush on Harry De Rosier she can't seem to shake. But thanks to Archibald's new obsession with the Civic Opera House, Olivia soon finds herself drawn into the strange city, and it's even more fascinating people.
