Talents and Gifts

My heart may keep me alive,
Keep blood pumping through my veins,
But it is poetry that sustains me when I'm weak,
It's words are what travel in my blood.

My soul may be what gives me compassion,
What gives me trust and love,
But it is the rhythm of the music,
And the beat of the drums that taught me kindness.

My body may be who I am,
Who I can be,
But dance and drama give me grace,
And they both give me gifts beyond that.

My eyes might show me the world,
And my mouth might let me say my mind,
But I would see nothing without my talents,
And experience nothing but sadness.

And for this I am grateful,
For poetry, song and dance are who I am,
Who I always will be,
And what I always will be.
