I was frozen where I stood, unable to move. A few minutes later, Hayden and Celeste came bounding down the staircase. They didn't understand what we were staring at, until they followed our eyes to the massacre right before our eyes. Celeste let out a cry, almost as if she was in pain. Will's hand was still covering my mouth, he removed it. I walked slowly to middle of the room, examining the scene. Who would do this? I turned on my heels, and fell to my knees with a gasp. There, on the wall was a message, written in blood:
We are coming.
I couldn't hold it back any longer. I screamed, tears rushing down my cheeks. It didn't matter, we realized we weren't safe anywhere. Wherever we went, we were always in eminent danger of a threat we knew nothing all knew nothing about. I looked over, Hayden had his arms around Celeste, as if he was shielding her. And Will stood, looking at me with sadness in his blue eyes.
I can't remember how, but we evacuated the Inn, soon after. The plan was to keep tracking the pendant, but I could tell that no one was so sure of it any longer. We walked until we came across a cave. The others went in, but I stayed outside, taking my stele out of my boot. I drew runes at the opening of the cave, hoping to keep us safe for as long as I could. The four of us were in a haze, staring at the fire, watching the flames crawl up towards to top of the cave. It was peaceful. Quite possibly the only peace we had left. I drifted off to sleep.
"Hey, wake up. Come with me." Will shook me awake. I blinked away the sleepiness in my eyes and glance over at the two that remained asleep.
I followed Will outside the cave. He sat on the grass, leaning back on his arms. I sat beside him and looked up. The stars were brighter than I'd ever seen them before. And there were so many. It was beautifully mesmerizing. Smiling, I looked over at the boy with the blonde hair, he looked back at me. I thought back to the other night, our lips almost meeting and then the night after that, denying any feelings for me and I looked away. After awhile, we went back into the cave. He fell asleep first and I lay there, thinking of the stars.
