Zoe's POV

"Heaven, are you gonna get that?" I yelled from the bathroom as the phone blared away. I waited for her response but was greeted with silence. "Heaven!" I barked again.

I groaned when she didn't respond, pausing my make up routine to run to the phone with a half-done face.

"Hello?" I answered out of breath.

"Zoe, hi..." A female voice replied.

I wrinkled my eyebrows. "Hi, um... May I ask who's calling?"

"Oh, I'm sorry, this is Janelle..."

"Janelle...?"

"Peterson. Brandon's sister..."

My eyes widened and I immediately felt bad for not recognizing her name. "Oh, Janelle! I'm sorry, it's just that it's been so long since I've heard from you. How are you?"

She sighed. "I'm taking each day as it comes... And you?"

"Same here, honey..."

"And how are the kids? I bet they've grown so much."

I smiled. "They're great, thanks for asking. I'm sure they'd love to see you again. They were crazy about your cooking..."

She giggled. "Yes they were. I remember Junior eating a whole batch of my cookies in less than an hour..."

We laughed together for a few moments until our chuckles faded into awkward silence. I wonder why she's calling?

I cleared my throat. "So, uh, how's Brandon?" I questioned, even though I truly didn't care.

"Well, that's actually why I called..."

The change in her tone worried me a little bit. As much as I hate the guy, I hope that nothing too horrible has happened to him.

"Brandon died in a car accident two days ago..."

My heart fell to the floor as I inhaled sharply. "J-janelle... I don't..." I stammered.

I scolded myself when I felt tears stinging the corner of my eyes. Should I be crying for him? The man that mistreated my son? The man that cheated on me countless times?

He deserved the ass whooping he got from Michael, but no matter how much anger I feel towards him, I can't find it in my heart to say that he deserved to die.

Janelle's sniffling broke my heart. "The funeral is next Friday, if you want to stop by..."

I swallowed a lump in my throat, wiping the hot tears from my cheeks. "I'll try my best... And I'm really sorry for your loss... You're family is in my prayers..."

"Thank you, Zoe. You're a great woman. Brandon should've held on to you when he had the chance..."

***********

He held me as if he was afraid that I would float away if he let go. There was something that felt wrong about being in his arms, but also something that felt right.

"Are you thinking about him?" He randomly spoke into the darkness, caressing my spine with his fingertips.

I sighed and nuzzled my face against his chest. "Who?"
