Bo's POV:
"My mom wants you to come to dinner Sunday night." I said as I put my clothes back on. Nova popped her head out of my bathroom and looked at me with a ghostly look on her face. "We don't date." She told me as she pulled her blonde hair into a ponytail. "She thinks we do though. And you can finally meet Lauren." I said when she laid back on the bed with me. "I'll see. My mother probably won't care." Nova told me.My mom had seen Nova around the house since March, and I always saw the smile that grew on her face when she saw her slipping out the back door. "She never stays." My mom said as she flipped through a magazine. "She has a home of her own." I told her. "You two aren't going to prom?" She asked. I didn't answer my mom's question. "I haven't asked." I told her honestly. "Ask. See what she says." My mother said.
Prom was in two weeks and I doubted Nova bought a dress.
- My mom is asking about prom. Are we going or? I texted her.
- If you want. I don't have a dress. Nova answered.
- It's my mom's dream. Not mine. I don't care if we go or not. I replied.
- I want to go. Valerie bought my ticket when she bought hers. She said.
- Then we can go. Just find a dress or whatever. I said.
- Don't sound too happy about it but I'll see you tomorrow. At her dinner.
Fuck. I forgot about my mom's dinner that she invited Nova to.
- See you then beautiful. I replied and I shut my phone off.
It was the shittiest way I could've asked her to prom, but I at least knew she'd say yes. Grabbing my phone I dialed a number I hadn't used since my sophomore year.
"Hey, it's me. I need your help with something."
Nova's POV:
I fidgeted with the hem of my dress as I slipped on my heels. I was beyond nervous because of this dinner. Meeting Bo's parents as the girl who basically only slept with him was going to be nerve racking. I hopped downstairs, my heels clacking on every step. My mother smiled at me as she saw what I was wearing."Fancy dinner?" She asked as she cut up vegetables for the soup she was making. "Something like that." I said. She took my navy blue dress and my black scrappy heels in, and I could see tears prick in her eyes. "You're gorgeous baby. But the dress looks short." My mother told me. I scowled at her because she knew my dress was fine.
"Where are you going anyways?" She asked. "My friend invited me over for dinner." I told her. I stole a carrot from her pile of vegetables, and she went to smack my hand. "Get out of my carrots Nova." She said wielding the knife as if she was going to use it on me. "Are you going to a boys?"
"Yes ma'am. Bo Smith." I said. She dropped her knife into the vegetables and looked up at me in shock. "The football star?" She asked. "Yes mother. The football star." I told her. "Girl you better get going. Don't be late and use your manners!" She said as I began walking towards the door.
Bo's POV:
I watched as Valerie jumped out of her truck and walked towards me. "What do you need Smith?" She said as she popped her gum."I want a romantic way to ask Nova to prom. You're her best friend so I'm guessing you know her well enough to help me." I told her. Valerie looked at me like I was some idiot who didn't know anything.
"How did Ashton ask you?" I asked her. As soon as Ashton left my mouth, she became a totally different person.
"Well I was practicing my hitting for the upcoming tournament, and he was there helping me. Well he was pitching me the softballs and he throws me one when I wasn't ready and he wrote on there the word prom?! And of course I agreed. It was too cute." She gushed.
"Nova doesn't like softball!" I told her. Valerie walked over to me and sat in front of me.
"She likes candles and roses. Her favorite candy is Reese's peanut butter cups, and her favorite song at the moment is Earned It by the Weeknd. If you can manage to get that then maybe she'd say yes." Valerie told me. I felt as if I had just been scolded by my mother after she finished.
"But she's coming over tonight!" I told Valerie. She looked at me as if I was stupid for the fifth time today. "Go to the store and get the candles and the roses. Buy the candy too. Use YouTube to get the song." She told me as if it was simple science yet again.
I watched as she walked back to her truck, and when she pulled out of my driveway, I took off.
Nova's POV:
"You look gorgeous." Bo told me as I got out of my car. I smiled at him when he leaned in to kiss me. He was humming a song that sounded familiar but I couldn't place it. "You're in a good mood." I commented as we walked inside. It was his turn to smile as he led me to the kitchen to meet his mother."Mother this is Nova Sparks. The girl from the hospital." He said in a strong voice. Mrs. Smith turned to face me with a warm look on her face.
"It's so good to meet you on better circumstances." His mother gushed as she hugged me. "It's good to meet you too Mrs. Smith." I told her with a smile. "Please, call me Tanya. Mrs. Smith is my mother in law." She said laughing.
"How long until dinner is ready?" Bo asked. "About an hour or so. I got started late." Tanya answered. "Well Nova and I are going to be upstairs ma." He told her. She turned and gave him a knowing smile as if she were in on some sort of secret. "I'll call you when it's ready!" She called as we walked out of the kitchen.
"What was that smile about?" I asked as we climbed the stairs to his room. "I have no idea baby." He told me as we reached his room.
When he opened the door the smell of lavender candles hit me. I could faintly hear the Weeknd's song Earned It playing in the background. His room was dim except for the candles thats spelled out the word Prom?.
I looked back at Bo to make sure he actually meant to show me this.
"Nova Sparks will you give me the greatest pleasure and go to prom with me?" Bo asked me in a shaky voice. Him being nervous made everything even better. "I'd love to." I told him before I kissed him.
