Chapter: 2- It Tasted so Good

Sarah's POV

I stood at the back of the lunch line in the cafeteria, waiting for everyone to get their lunch. Although I didn't want to admit it, I was impatiently waiting, but seriously I was hungry. I couldn't be blamed for that, could I? Sighing, I moved as the line was finally growing smaller. About ten minutes later I was at the front of the line and smiling at the lunch lady, I pointed at the chicken sandwich they were serving. The other choice was a salad...

"Hey Laura, can I have two sandwiches today?" Yes, that's right, I knew the lunch lady. But I couldn't be blamed, Laura was a wonderfully nice old lady, she'd been working at Eastwond for twenty years now, and had all white hair, a warm smile, and brown eyes. She was like a mother to me, and she was the only person at this school who didn't judge me because of my weight.

"Of course honey!" Smiling she added another sandwich to my tray before handing it to me over the bar. "Have a good rest of the school day, okay?" Laughing I began to slide down the rest of the bar, nodding to Laura in agreement.

"You too!" Moving along I picked up other foods that I'd probably not want to eat but would eat anyway before paying for some snacks and my meal. When everything was paid for I exited the line, standing in the cafeteria and looking around for a place to eat. As my wandering eyes were searching they skimmed over the whole room, zooming in on the places I'd need to avoid sitting near and walking by.

The cafeteria was a decent size, the theme was similar to that of an eighties restaurant though, it was hideous. It was decorated with red, blue and yellow colors. Again hideous. Along the room there was an organized series of booths and round/rectangular tables. The booths were built into the four sides of the wall, kind of like a blockade to all the tables set inside them.

At the front of the room there were double doors, painted a mustard yellow, standing off against the white brick walls. The booths were red, and all the tables a deep blue. Once more the cafeteria was hideous. Scanning my eyes I landed right on my targets, my group of tormentors.

Like any cliche story, the popular kids sat in the middle of the lunch room, a whole table being occupied as no one needed to eat I think. My guess was that they sat there because it was the only place where you would be the center of attention.

Making a mental note not to go anywhere near there I moved on, looking instead in the four corners of the room. At one corner a group of musicians sat, playing on their instruments as they took up an entire row of booths and a few tables. Shaking my head at them I couldn't help but to. I mean why would you play your instrument in the cafeteria where water or food could spill all over it, seriously those things are expensive!

In another corner a group of black dressed teens stood, besides the dark clothes and auras they seemed to emit, they were all laughing and conversing happily, their smiles ear-splittingly large and I couldn't help but to suppress a shudder. There was no way I was going over to them, I wouldn't have anything to happily chat about anytime soon.

The second to last corner was full of what I liked to refer to as the "geek squad", basically all the knowledge blessed people sat there, their amazing talks about whatever they learned floating through the air. A couple of kids walked passed them, looks of confusion crossing their faces before they walked away, and of course, I couldn't go anywhere near there, I wasn't up for a talk about math today.

Then finally, as if guided by the bells of heaven, my eyes landed on the last corner of the room. It was blessedly empty, only about two booths occupied and sighing I began the journey across the room and to my sanctuary. When I made it to a booth without any problems I sighed, setting my things down and sliding into the seat, pulling out my phone I plugged my headphones in and began to eat, tuning into some of my favorite bands.

I was listening to The Neighbourhood and eating my second sandwich when I felt a presence in front of me, looking up I saw Brittany standing at my booth. She was still wearing the same outfit from before, designer jeans with a crop top that showed off her belly ring piercing and flat stomach, she also had on some black open toe heels, showing off her bright pink toenail polish and man if those death traps were high.

Her outfit was so different from my t-shirt, jeans and converses look. But what could I say, it was comfortable, and it's not like I had anyone to impress.

"What do you want Brittany." Giving a look of boredom I watched as she smiled evilly before waving her hand, and then like magic, the rest of her posse arrived behind her.

"Nothing hippo. Ah, but like always I see you're busy stuffing your fat face. At least you don't look like a clown now." I couldn't really tell if the last part was thrown in to let me know that she approved of my makeup-less face, but either way it still hurt.

"Nice to know. Is that all?" Staring at her my gaze soon drifted to the rest of the students crowded around me and I couldn't help the shock that coursed through me when my eyes landed on one in particular. James.

He was still showing his look of disgust, and for some reason that look made me feel sad. Like I was supposed to be doing something that I wasn't. "No, I wanted to give you a gift." What? My attention was soon back on Brittany, fast enough to see her hold out her hand to one of her friends who promptly ruffled through her bag, and then carefully placed something into Brittany's waiting hand.

When she had a firm grip on the object Brittany turned back to me. Even though I didn't want to I found myself staring straight into her eyes, but I didn't miss her peaking at the wrapper of whatever it is she had.

Looking away from her I focused in on her posse, who were all whispering among each other, some had their phones out, obviously recording what was about to occur, of which I still had no idea. The cafeteria had strangely become quiet, everyone focused on what had the popular guys all in front of me, and uncomfortable, I gulped.

Scanning the faces in front of me amazingly my eyes fell on James' again, he wore a frown on his face, a look of dislike on his face as he stood away from everyone, arms crossed across his chest and he leaned against an empty booth not too far away.

But my attention was once more grasped as a flicker of movement from Brittany caught me off guard."Hey, what are-." I was cut off by Brittany quickly shoving the mystery item between my lips. It didn't take long for me to recognize what it was. A Snickers bar?

"See I told you guys, pigs eat anything you feed them." Ouch. Well, that cut deep. Yet even though they were words to spite, words to obviously hurt me, it felt to me like the whole cafeteria burst with laughter, everyone near me laughing at my shocked expression.

Looking around I could see everyone laughing at me, everyone laughing at what was happening to me, and feeling my eyes starting to fill with tears I got up, running towards the double doors of the exit.

On the way I didn't even think of how the kids must be having a joy out of this, not only was I running, but I was running away with the Snickers bar forgotten in my mouth. I passed many kids recording me as I ran, I passed Laura, who had come from behind the counter wringing her hands with a worried expression on her face. I ran passed James, who for some reason was fuming mad at the time, and I ran out of the cafeteria.

Running down the hall I finally let myself go, letting my tears fall as I got closer to the front door of the school. When I got there I was out of breath, so I stopped, instead sobbing as I breathlessly walked out the front doors of the school and towards my house.

I was so sad, sad that my former best friend did this to me. Sad that I let her do this to me. Sad everyone laughed at me, recorded this, sad I couldn't run away without getting tired. Sad I was fat, sad I wasn't pretty. And most of all I was so sad, that in the midst of things, on the way back home I ate that Snickers bar.

...And it tasted so good.
