If Only

If only, if only everything hadn't changed for the worse.

If the sun rose every morning and was still shining like it used to.

If the butterflies all came back to life, fluttering around, not buried in dried up leaves or hot red fire ants.

If all the leaf-less trees standing in isolation would grow for once. 

If only, if only we had taken care of our home.

If we weren't just sightless bodies searching in the dark for sunlight.

If we hadn't killed all our animals, then we and them both would benefit.

If we hadn't chopped down all the trees, we would have enough oxygen.

If only, if only we had treated the land better, then maybe we wouldn't have to regret what we destroyed or have to pay for it by suffering in pain.
