found and lost

A book in lap, a stray strand on her face
She sat by the window in a distant haze
Away from the chaos in the little house
She sat shutting out his voice
He hummed on as the water trickled
Lost in a song of promises fickle
He sang on to drown that flutter
Flutter of her pages brittle
This was far from right
Far from light
They couldn't see any side bright
She had a dream that he didn't
He had a responsibility that she didn't
Ways were different very different
But they had strayed off to this unknown together
Lost they had found each other
But once found they had to lose one another
They had to go back
Back to never meet again
Back to a place without his face
Back to a place without her, the same
So she was reading
And went on reading
Not a word through her tears blurring
So he was humming
And went on humming
Not a word through the waters streaming
