We flew back over the trees to Sarajah's cave. She swooped close to the ground, set us down, and landed herself. I stood up and ran over to my mother who was struggling to stand. She teetered on her feet a bit and I rushed to her side to support her. I could now see her clearly. She was very thin, dirt covered, and pale.
"She needs food, Sarajah! Where do you keep it?" I asked.
"Follow me," she said as she motioned with her tail.
I helped my mother sit down on the warm rock and hurried after Sarajah. I followed her down, yet another, small tunnel. It led to a little, torch-lit chamber. The chamber had shelflike structures carved into the walls. The shelves had a little bit of food clustered on them. I browsed them to see what was there. I selected a ripe apple and a small loaf of bread. I quickly checked the bread for mold and seeing it had none I hurried out of the room and back to my mother.
When I arrived back, I saw my mom sitting there on a rock; eyes closed, face lifted to the sun, and a huge smile on her face. It brought tears to my eyes. I ran to her with the food.
"Take your time. Don't eat too fast," I said as I handed the food to her.
She nodded and took the food. She ripped off a small piece of the bread and ate it slowly. I turned away from her and walked over to Sarajah.
"We need to take her home. Can you fly her home?" I asked.
"Yes, I can. I will take you both home tonight," she responded.
"Both of us?"
"Yes, both. I will take both you and your mom back home."
"But I don't want to go back! I can go back!"
"You have to go back!"
"Why?!? You rescued me and brought me here! I can't go back to my father!"
"You have to!"
"Why can't I stay here?!? My father still hates me and I hate him! And he tried to kill me!! Please let me stay!!"
"No!" The ground shook a little, and I jumped back in surprise.
"Why not?" I whimpered.
"I have to go get my hatchlings, and I can't have you hanging around and getting in the way!"
"Then why did you bring me here and save me?"
"I couldn't watch you die....but you would only be in the way if you stayed!" she finished firmly.
"O-ok. I'm sorry..."
"I will return you both to your home tonight."
Sarajah turned and walked away. I sat down confused.
Why is she treating me like this?
