Red

Heart pounding.
Anxiety.
Gripping, controlling my every move.
I need to get out.
A way to silence the screaming,
a million voices in my head.

The edge is just before me,
a straight drop into darkness.
One step and--

But I'm not falling.
I'm sliding, slipping, spiralling.
Spinning in a whirlpool of red.
Trapped in this ocean of blood,
whipped and frothing and roaring.
All these waves that build and build,
but never break.

Pain.
The pressure of a world to which I don't belong.
Sweet release,
The blade splits
punctures my skin

Silence, peace.
A heartbeat is all I need.
