________________________"You cannot pass an OWL," said Professor McGonagall grimly, "without serious application, practice and study. I see no reasons why everybody in this class should not achieve an OWL in Transfiguration as long as they put in the work."
Catherine stared down at the old, oak desk before her, absentmindedly tapping her quill as she listened to yet another speech about how important the OWL's were. It was only her third class of the day, third class of the year, and she was already tired of it.
It was true that transfiguration was one of her best and most favorite subjects, for she always excelled above most in her year. It was also true that Professor McGonagall adored the girl and always enthused about her prodigious success in the subject to all of the other professors. But no matter how much she loved the class, she always internally groaned when the older lady decided to give lectures on their future.
"Oi, Cath," She heard the deep voice of Sirius whispering from his seat in the adjacent desk. She chose to ignore him and continued staring at the filled up chalkboard. "Psst... Cath--" he tried again,"--Cath! Catherine!" he ended up yelling.
"Is there a problem, Mr. Black?" Professor McGonagall stopped her lecture, pursing her lips into a thin line as she glared disapprovingly at the boy.
Sirius smiled brightly at the woman, trying to look as innocent as he could. "Of course not, Professor," he said sweetly. "I was only trying to ask Ms. Sinclair, here, if she would be ever-so-kind as to stop tapping her quill, it's quite annoying."
"I'm sure you were, Black. So, as I was saying... today we are starting Vanishing Spells. These are easier than Conjuring Spells, which you would not usually attempt until NEWT level, but they are still among the most difficult magic you will be tested on in your OWL."
As Professor McGonagall finished her speech and left them to themselves to practice the spells, Catherine finally turned to Sirius and was surprised to see that he was staring straight at her. "You called?" she said snarkily.
"As a matter of fact, I did. James wants you to get Lily's attention for him," he said with an annoyed edge. "He says it's 'important.' Whatever that means."
Catherine scoffed and leaned to look past Sirius at James, who was currently writing in a small journal. Sensing her stare, he looked up and gazed at her pleadingly, mouthing 'please' four times. "Oh, alright." She huffed, rolling her eyes. "But if I get caught in the crossfire this time, you are never to ask for my help again."
"Cross my heart!" James smiled cheerfully as he gestured a cross over his chest.
Catherine smiled curtly and halfheartedly as she turned to where she had a good view of Lily Evans. She was sitting with Mary-- about two rows up from Catherine and Remus-- and was currently struggling to conjure her vanished item: a large withered looking rat. Catherine could see her cheeks turning an extreme shade of red, as well as small beads of sweat threatening to fall from her brow. To say she felt bad for the girl was something new, as she'd never seen Lily struggle with much. Lily only ever succeeded and was only beat out for the top of their year by Marcus Mobley, a Ravenclaw, and Catherine herself.
Catherine pondered on how to approach the girl, for she definitely did not want Lily to be angry with her. She'd seen the redhead's temper with James millions of times, and she definitely did not want to be dragged into that. So, she decided as she pulled out her wand from her robe pocket, she'd get Lily's attention in a way that was sure to work.
