BEHIND THE MUSIC
“Red” was a tough track to get right, and, rare for Taylor, it sat unfinished for months until the album’s pop leanings clarified the song’s sound.
BETWEEN THE LINES
“Red” explores passion and pain as colors. Red alone can symbolize a huge range of emotion, as Taylor has pointed out, and perhaps the color’s most defining characteristic is its intensity. The songwriter explained, “I wrote this song about the fact that some things are just hard to forget because the emotions involved with them were so intense and, to me, intense emotion is red.”
FUN FACTS
The chorus features a bouzouki, a Greek stringed instrument that sounds like a bass mandolin. A Maserati, an Italian luxury car, costs around $130,000. Drive carefully.
DIARY DECODER
“SAG” could be another reference to the astrological sign that Jake and Taylor share (Sagittarius), although some point out it’s also the acronym for Screen Actors Guild, of which Jake is an award-nominated member.
CHARTING SUCCESS
The album’s second promotional single, and fifth official single, “Red” climbed to number two on the U.S. Country Songs chart and number six on the Hot 100 chart, and was certified platinum.
