Chapter 2

What’s your way of defining “angel”? Is it a blinding light? Is it an elegant person with elegant wings that corrects wrongs and smothers down evil? Or is it just a simple spark of hope in the sinister darkness? To me, angels are just a species relatively close to human beings. Really, there isn’t much of a difference, except the expectation of extra wings, depending on your definition of angel. Is it because of our extra wings why human beings think we are servants of God? Is that why we are holy? Wings… they are in some ways like hearts, they carry emotion and fate, decisions and hopes. We don’t necessarily need wings to survive, but it brings joy to us. If we lost our wings, we would become like any other human, although we would be in doubt most of the time. Life would be hard. For example, if you saw a bird without its wings, what would you think? Is the bird a disgrace to all bird kind? Or is it a pitied animal? It would be lost, and scared. It would be at risk in every single moment of its life. It would be an unworthy outsider, a wonder of how it’s still alive, it would be a disastrous flaw. And because of that, because of all the things done to it and what it has been through, it lost its hope of ever finding its way back home.

*~*~*

I woke up with two pairs of eyes that were full of concern staring down at me. I wanted to scream, but I didn’t. It’s something called self-control. As surprised and confused as I was, I just raised an eyebrow. The two people- one was a guy with dirty blond hair and hazel eyes and the other was the school nurse- laughed at my confused expression.

“I, uh, what happened?” I asked while sitting up on the small bed I was on. I realized I was in the nurse’s office: they had a small bed and the walls were painted a worn-out grey.

“We should be asking you the exact same thing, Miss Johnson,” the nurse said. She was a kind-hearted woman in her mid-thirties. She was the type of lady who seemed thankful for everything and everyone. Her blue eyes shone with laughter.

“I found you on the ground in front of your locker,” the guy chuckled. Then his brown eyes became serious and full of deep concern. “Are you alright?”

“I’m alright, alright,” I snorted as I threw the light sheets off my legs. I stood up trying to look as normal as possible. I suddenly remembered everything. The flashes of being alone filled my thoughts, as did the thought of the dark-haired man. My eyes couldn’t see straight as I stumbled backwards. A wave of nausea hit me and the urge to vomit was overwhelming.

“Or not…” I choked out. I tried to stand up again but miserably lost my balance. I tripped over my own feet; but a strong pair of arms held me up.

“Do you want to go home?” both the nurse and the guy questioned at the same time.

“Yes, I actually do… I have a major headache right now…” I started rubbing my temples of my throbbing head.

“I’ll take her home,” the guy suggested he turned to face the nurse who nodded right away.

“Here, you should take some pain killers,” she suggested. I smiled and mouthed thanks as I stood (was held up actually) and walked to the door with the guy's help.
