Breathing

Breathing. It seems like such a simple thing. In. Out. In. Out. We inhale oxygen. We exhale carbon dioxide. We do it unknowingly sometimes. But other times? Other times we have to force ourselves to breathe. We have to take deep, slow breaths through our sobs and tears, trying to calm ourselves. Why does it hurt to do something so simple? A simple breath can be so much work. So much work when all you want to do is not breathe... Your shuddering breaths through the sobs. Your short, quick breaths of panic. Your deep sighs trying to compose yourself. While wiping away your tears...
Breathing is not always "such a simple thing". It can feel like you're fighting for every single breath. It can feel like someone is pushing on your chest and you can only take short quick breaths. Breathing is not a simple thing. It's a battle to breathe.

But what counts is that you are breathing. Through the panicked breaths. Through the shuddering sobs. Even if you are fighting for every breath or if you need to remind yourself to breathe every five minutes. What counts is that you are. Keep breathing. Whether through a panic attack or through a break down. Keep breathing. Keep fighting for breath. This is not the end.

So though it may not be a simple thing, you must keep breathing anyways, my friend. In. Out. In. Out. Just breathe.
