*Later that night*

Daryl sighed and looked over at Paul, who was sleeping peacefully against the trunk of the tree. He couldn't help but smile; finally, he had a partner.

-

Daryl and Paul rose at daybreak and set off to find some food. Paul got the second watch during the night, but ended up falling back asleep anyways. At least they were both well rested now.

Daryl's exceptional tracking skills made locating an animal to hunt easy. They were on the trail of a young deer and all they had to do now was kill it.

"Don't move..." Daryl whispered. He slowly lifted his crossbow, leveling it just right with the deer's lower neck area. Then he slowly took a breath in, making final adjustments, before shooting the arrow in sync with the release of his breath. It shot right into the light brown deer, causing it to collapse to the ground.

*Later*

Daryl and Paul sat around the makeshift fire they had going, roasting the deer from earlier.

"So, where did you learn to use a crossbow like that?" Paul asked curiously.

"Eh? My older brother started to teach me when I was younger, and then I just learned from there on my own. Never expected I'd be using it to kill people who are already dead though... It has been critical to my survival, more helpful than people have ever been." He sighed.

"Oh, I'm sorry about your brother... We've both lost loved ones. I guess that's bound to happen in this hell of a world..."

Daryl just gave a slight nod and continued eating, deciding not to linger on with the subject of lost ones.

Once finished with their meal, Daryl decided to go get some more firewood to last them the night. Paul was left all alone at the temporary camp, and the silence allowed him to clear his mind and process everything that happened these past two days. He pulled his leather journal out of his backpack and began writing his thoughts and feelings. He also wrote everything he knew about Daryl so far; the crossbow, past, his personality, and then some.

The silence was broke with the sound of crackling twigs and rustling leaves. Paul shoved his notebook back into his bag and jumped up, hoping to see Daryl, but it was only a walker. He picked up his knife and approached it. Once he got just a few feet away, Paul realized its arms were gone and there was an "A" carved into its stomach.

"What the...?" He gasped as he roughly pushed his blade through the head of the walker. Then he yanked it back out and let the walker fall to the ground to further examine the extraordinary walker. "Let's see... It has a bullet wound to the chest and several bruises. I think this happened recently, after all, the blood from the carving is still fresh."

His thoughts were cut off by the sound of more crackling in the bushes again and got ready to attack; now paranoid of whoever did this.

"Woah, easy there tiger." Said a familiar voice as Daryl appeared through the brush.

"Oh good, it's just you..." Paul sighed of relief.

"What happened here?" Daryl questioned, observing the walker on the ground.

"I've never seen anything like it. Creepy right?" Paul mumbled, as the thought of bad people doing this sent shivers down his spine.

"Yeah. He died just a few hours ago and it wasn't a suicide. Let's keep our guard up and leave as soon as the sun starts to rise tomorrow morning."

Paul nodded in approval to the plan and the two of them went back over to the fire. Daryl placed his pile of recently collected branches in the dirt besides the fire. He then scooped up a handful of dirt and released it on the fire, extinguishing the flames, now leaving a small puff of smoke. There was no light left now except the night sky.

"W-why'd you do that?" Paul questioned nervously.

"It's giving away our location to whoever is out there. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not suffer the same fate as that guy did..."

The two climbed back up the large oak tree and they got settled for sleep. Daryl took the first watch, crossbow in hand, as Paul lay there, trying his best to sleep, which was difficult with paranoia rushing through his head.
