Christopher Brown

"And you did what?" My mother shouted at me as soon as I told her that I was suspended from school.

"I got in a fight again, but believe me.. It was worth it. H-"

"If you think fighting is okay just because someone spoke to you 'sideways' as you'd say, again, then you're a fool. What'd the guy do this time? Look at you the wrong way?" She asks with a raised eyebrow sarcastically.

I cut my eyes at her for a second and then mentally tell myself that I need to chill before she goes off on me.

"It wasn't stupid. He said directly out his mouth that Imma 'fuck nigga' an-"

"And that gives you the right to repeat it?"

"Ma, you just asked me wh-" Once again, I get cut off and I know that this won't be the last time in this discussion of ours.

"Just hurry up and finish the story, Christopher."

"Well he spoke mess about me and somebody else important to me so I told myself that I couldn't just let him practically run all over me like I'm some punk when I'm not. So I fought him and that's that."

"Oh that's that, huh? Well you're on punishment and that's that."

"There was a reason for it, though. I don't see how you can't get where I'm coming from," I attempt an argument, but there was no use.

"You need to learn how to control yourself. You've been like this since you were younger and I hate it. I should have done something sooner, but since I didn't.. I'm going to now. You're gonna be 18 in what? 5 months?" She pauses. "You need to learn to control your mouth, control your actions and maybe then you'll stop getting suspended from school," my mother chides me.

"I know how to, but certain times it ain't gonna work. At that time it couldn't have worked even if I'd tried since he asked for it."

"Yeah, okay," my mother nods her head probably just trying to dismiss the conversation and I comply because I know that no matter what I say, it won't change her mind.

I don't get why she's trying to get me to change after it's been so long. It's who I am, I'm used to it and maybe it's time she got used to it, too.

Layla Wilkes

"So when does he come back to school?" Allie asks me referring to Chris.

I just told them all that he got suspended this morning and they all thought it was pretty stupid besides Allie and me. It was so expected. Chris should have just listened to me or at least did it off school grounds.

"I don't know. I guess I'll find out later..." I trail off. "I'll see him if he isn't in trouble with his mom, but if he is I guess talking on the phone will have to do."

"It's been hours since he left. Imma try calling right now," Jaylen says while pulling out his phone.

I watch as he types on his phone for a second and then puts his phone to his ear and after a few seconds, he speaks.

"Aye. What's good, bruh?"

He pauses, listening to whatever Chris has to say I'm assuming and then responds. "She right here."

"Oop. Chris must wanna speak to you," Dom guessed and then shoved hella French fries into his mouth.

"Here," Jaylen motions his phone towards me. "And make it quick, bruh. He should just call your freakin' phone."
