We were walking in silence down an empty street, passing dark allies and the occasional homeless man. I glanced sideways at Skylar, she kept looking around taking in the entire empty street and then she started humming an unfamiliar tune. The black cat was still here walking attentively by her side occasionally stopping to look into the allies and then running to catch up with us.

“Can I ask what’s up with the cat,” I said, wanting to break the awkward silence. I looked down at the small mammal and was a bit surprised when it looked right back up at me with intelligent green eyes.

“Hm?” She says, my question taking her out of her humming. She then looked down at her companion. “Oh! This is Alastor. He used to be a person but now he’s a cat. In order for him to repay the debt he owes he has to accompany me on my quest.” She said the last part in a deep, dramatic voice then burst out in a fit of giggles and I couldn’t help but crack a smile.

“So what brings you here? This isn’t exactly a tourist hotspot,” I say

“I thought I told you? You are the reason why Alastor and I are here.”

“Oh right.”

Another awkward silence.

“So is that glowing hand thingy all you can do.”

She smiled at me again and said, “No actually I can see into the future, hence the visions, I can talk to animals, hence the reason why a cat follows me around, and I can also heal people, which is what you just experienced.”

“Wow! And were you just born like that?”

“Yeah pretty much. I was born with these amazing abilities and my parents kind of freaked out. They would have dropped me off at an orphanage but I saw it coming and I told them up front. This made them angry so they cut the class and dumped me on the side of the road. I used to live in Montana and they dropped me off near a reservation. I haven’t seen them since.” I saw the memories flicker through her eyes.

“I’m so sorry,” I said, looking down at the concrete.

“Oh it’s no big deal. I’m kind of glad I wouldn’t want to live with people that don’t accept me for me. I met a lovely medicine woman on the reservation and she taught me everything I know. She’s all the family I could ever want.” The cheer was back in her voice when she talked about this mysterious medicine woman.

“That’s good. I guess everything worked out for the better.”

She nodded and we finally reached the steps to my apartment. I opened the main door for her and then I led the way to the small elevator. It made a lot of noise when going up and it kind of freaked me out a bit. As it shuddered to a halt on the third floor, I couldn’t help but clutch at the railing. Skylar was looking up at the ceiling, performing a thorough analysis on the lights, with Alastor in her arms his tail swaying back and forth. When the doors opened he leaped down and ran out of the metal box.

“Oh crap! I forgot, no pets allowed. What are we going to do with him?” I asked, scratching my head, trying to think of ways to keep the landlord from finding out.

“No worries, Alastor is just scanning the perimeter he’ll be back. He’s smart too so he won’t get caught I promise.”

We made our way down the hall were we stopped at the door marked 1D. I pulled out my keys inserting the proper one into the lock. I jiggled the doorknob then pushed my shoulder against the door twice before it finally opened. That was my normal routine because my landlord refused to get it fixed. I walked in, Skylar close behind and I switched on the lights. I was about to close the door when a black, furry mass dashed through the opening. I realized it was Alastor after I let out an unattractive squeal. Stupid cat, scaring the crap the out of me. Skylar knelt down next to him and murmured something like, “everything good?” and Alastor nodded in response. I wonder how long it will take for me to get used to the fact that the cat can understand human speech. I massaged my temple already feeling a migraine forming. What has become of my life? Skylar started walking around my sorry excuse for a living room.

“Do you have a roommate?” She asked.

“I used to,” I replied.

“What happened to her?”

“She had rich parents that payed half the rent. She lived with me for a time but then said that she had fallen in love with some guy from the UK and was going to move away with him. She made me swear that I never tell her parents and I haven’t seen her since. Her parents still pay half the rent since they fail to check up on her so I’m not complaining.” I shrugged, plopping down on the couch. “So… are you here because I have powers like you?”

Skylar turned towards me tearing her eyes away from the picture of my mother and I at my high school graduation. “Technically speaking yes, you might not have the same exact powers as me but you are definitely gifted. I don’t have a doubt about that, but you see how this works is that you have to find it for yourself. I have a feeling I know what we should start practicing so I propose we start bright and early tomorrow morning.” She started making her way to the glass door that led out to the balcony.

“Can’t do tomorrow morning,” I said, leaning my head against the wall, my eyes shut tight, “I have class, sorry.”

“No problem I don’t like mornings any way how about later on in the evening?”

“Sounds like a plan.”
