Chapter Twenty-Three
“Are you coming?” Honour addressed the question to Grant and Jackson who were both scowling up at me as I climbed into the SUV.
“Yes,” they said at the same time as I said, “No.”
“I’m not dragging you into this,” I hissed, glaring down at the boys as I crowded into the vehicle, trying to stay out of the way of the others who were helping with Abby and vaguely noticing that the seats had been arranged to line the walls of the huge car, leaving a large space in the middle and allowing for a lot more seating.
“This really isn’t the time to ponder your decision,” Honour said as the sound of police sirens reached my ears.
Before I could say anything else, the two boys were in the vehicle, forcing me to back up as Honour slammed the doors shut. “Drive!” the guy bent over my sister shouted, his surgical gloves stained with blood.
“Abby,” I whispered, my heart a ball of pain in my chest as I looked at her incredibly pale face.
“Jade,” Jackson said, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and immediately, I shifted to rest more comfortably against him, trying to get rid of the horrible chill that had settled into my bones. “She’ll be okay,” he whispered.
I didn’t respond because even though I wanted to believe him, the colour of her skin wasn’t promising and there was a lot of blood pouring from the wound.
“I can help,” I said, slipping off the seat, letting Jackson’s arm fall from around my shoulders as I shifted to kneel beside the guy with the light green eyes who seemed to be the resident doctor.
“You can’t help right now,” he said, focused on the needle in his hand, preparing it to go in the IV.
“I can slow the blood to her heart without stopping it. That will help right?” I whispered, swallowing hard as I looked down at Abby who remained pale and unconscious.
The guy’s green eyes shifted and met mine for a second. “That would help,” he said in his deep, flat voice, shifting over slightly to make room for me. Taking a deep breath, I lightly ran my hands over her collar bone, searching for the pressure point I needed that lay among the sensitive veins running up to her neck. “Your hands are shaking,” the guy pointed out unnecessarily.
“This is dangerous,” I whispered, concentrating on my task. “If I miss by a fraction of an inch, she could die.”
“She might die anyway,” he said coldly.
I let out a little whimper as my fingers located the spot I was looking for and gently I pressed down before smoothing my hands up her neck and finding the second pressure point which I also pressed on. “It’s done,” I said quietly, my voice barely audible.
“Good. Put your hand here,” he said, placing his hand palm down on Abby’s stomach just beside the shuriken embedded there. “Press hard but let up on the pressure as soon as the weapon is gone, got it?”
I nodded, feeling sick to my stomach at the thought of pulling the piece of metal out of my sister. “Do it,” I said, forcing myself to forget about my emotions, feeling a sense of relief as the numbness settled over my heart, allowing me to focus on the task without thinking about my sister and whether she would live or die.
