[ 08. CHAPTER EIGHT : THE DEAD WON'T BOTHER YOU, IT'S THE LIVING YOU HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT : he's gonna miss her, but he knows it's for the best. ]

All that could be heard from the hospital room that housed Mallory was heartbroken wailing. Only a few seconds prior, the teen's mother had told her that Riley hadn't made it, and she had just broken down in tears. She could still feel the lingering touch of Riley's lips against hers and it made her feel worse. She knew in her heart that it should have been her that died on the roof, not her best friend.

"Why did this happen to us?" Mallory sobbed, her mother stroking back her hair. "To her?"

"I don't know, baby." Mrs Thompson cooed, tears streaming down her own face. "I truly don't know."

"She was too good to die that way." Mallory held tightly onto her mother in fear that she would disappear if she didn't.

Mallory had been left alone to rest from the horrifying events although it had been hard for her to find comfort without pushing down on her wounds. She stirred once a light pressure was applied to her hand and her eyelids fluttered, gaze landing on the brown-haired boy she had become infatuated with.

"Hi." She said softly, turning her hand so her fingers could be linked through his.

Noah's eyes turned to her face and the look in them was heartbreaking. They were bloodshot and Mallory knew he had been crying. They were sunken in from lack of sleep and his hair had tufts sticking out from different spots. His lower lip was shredded from the amount of force that his grinding teeth had pushed onto it. His back tensed up, forcing a smile onto his pale face as he stared at the girl he was smitten with.

"Hey." He said equally as softly, his slender fingers running over the smooth skin of her knuckles. His voice didn't have the same happiness that it usually possessed when talking to her and she definitely noticed. "How are you?"

"My shoulder and ass hurt like a bitch." Mallory said bluntly, shifting slightly so she was propped up against the mountain of pillows the hospital had provided for her. "So does my heart but I don't think the doctors here have a cure for that."

"I'm sorry I couldn't be there to save you." Noah's voice cracked, averting his gaze from the brunette's face in shame. The guilt ate away at his insides as he had been blaming himself for her injuries since the ambulance had left the police station.

"This isn't your fault." Mallory shook her head, using her free hand to move his head back to its original place so he could look at her. "Nobody could've known what would have happened. I'm just lucky I was able to get out of there with my life. I can't say the same for Riley."

"I heard about her death from the Sheriff." Noah chewed on his ruined lip, fingers trembling from the mention of Riley. Although he didn't talk to her as much as he did Mallory, he felt a lot more sympathy for her than he did for Nina. Riley was one of the good ones, he knew that. "They found Tyler's body in his burning car."

"What?" Mallory's eyes widened, looking at Noah in disbelief. The mention of Tyler set her slightly on edge because he had done this to her, to them. "When?"

"A couple hours ago." Noah released his lip, not wanting to do further damage to the sensitive skin. "They think the killing spree's over now."

"Do you?" Mallory raised her eyebrows and scrunched up her lips, almost knowing his answer before the question had left her lips.

Noah only shook his head, a sigh passing through his lips. Theories were running through his brain about the whole situation but he didn't want to overwhelm the injured girl in his company. He sucked in a breath, deciding to change the subject.

"Are you okay?" He questioned lightly, trying his best not to trigger a bad reaction.

Mallory's lip quivered and for the second time that day, tears leaked out of her eyes. "I'm not okay." She said brokenly, tightening her grip on Noah's hand. "My best friend is dead in such horror cliche fashion, the suspected killer is supposedly dead but I know that isn't how the movie plays out. The real killer is most likely prowling the streets, looking for who's vulnerable and who they can kill off next in our peaceful little town." With every word that passed through her lips, she got more hysterical.

Noah shifted onto the hospital bed and released his hold on Mallory's hand, pulling her whole body into his. She allowed him to do so, climbing slightly onto his lap and burying her face into the crook of his arm. One hand reached up into her hair, the other taking to stroking her back. As he comforted the broken girl, he knew he couldn't let something like this happen to her again. He would do everything in his will to keep her alive, even if that meant risking his own life in the process.

here is chapter 8!! i apologize for it being so short but i'm just so terrible at writing my own original scenes. i really wanted to make this chapter as depressing as i could and i hope i did because mallory is going to be very on edge in the next few chapters and noah is going to be right by her side. anyway, season 2 is almost over and i have no idea who the heck the killer is. most likely a male killer as revealed by the recent episode. i personally think it's eli because he's super shifty and it would be waaaay too obvious if it was gustavo. who else thinks zoe & noah are cute as hell? obv in this story they won't be together (unless people want something to happen by season 1's finale that could hurt them?? - just kidding). i hope you guys enjoyed this chapter and i promise to update a lot sooner for the next one! adios.
