"Happy Father's Day!"

I am startled awake by the sound of my young daughter Jill's excited yell. I blink open my eyes to find her and my wife Iris standing at the foot of the bed. My beautiful wife with her faded red hair and green eyes, and my daughter, who is the splitting image of her mother, but with my blue eyes. Iris leans over from behind her, helping her hold the tray of breakfast that's nearly as big as she is. She's wearing a summery maternity dress that falls to her ankles, and has Jill dressed in a cute little purple skirt and white t-shirt. The two walk around to the side of the bed and Iris helps Jill set the tray on my lap. There's a stack of pancakes, bacon, and coffee, with syrup and butter on the side.

"What's this? Breakfast in bed? Thank you, sweetie," I beam, rubbing Jill's head affectionately.

"Try it! Try it!"

"I will, I will."

I drench the pancakes in syrup and cut myself a slice, popping it in my mouth. They're buttermilk pancakes. Iris' specialty.

"Oh, they're delicious!"

Jill clenches her little hands into fists and squeals, jumping up and down. As I take another bite, I quickly shoot Iris a joking look that says, "she wasn't even in the room when you made these, was she?" Iris shrugs in response, with a look like, "what? She's only five, you know." I chuckle out loud as I realize I just had a telepathic conversation with my wife. Jill scrambles up onto our bed, wriggling under my arm. I smile and hug her tight. Iris takes a deep breath as she puts one hand under her swollen stomach, and the other on her lower back, rubbing gently.

"Are you alright?" I ask her.

"I'm fine. This little guy is getting pretty heavy though. I can hardly wait for him to come out and meet us," she groans.

"Don't say that. You've still got a couple weeks left to go before we can meet him."

I reach out and lay a hand on her stomach gently. She smiles and puts her hand on mine. Suddenly there is a little bump against my hand. My eyes widen as Iris laughs.

"Did he just..."

"He kicked for you. That's the first time he's done that," she beams, cutting me off.

"What happened, Daddy?" Jill asks excitedly.

"Your baby brother just kicked."

"Can I feel, Mommy? Can I feel?"

"Of course. Let's see if he'll do it again."

Iris skirts around the bed and lies down next to Jill. She takes her hand and presses it into her stomach.

"Here. Feel here."

I smiles as Jill's eyes widen and her mouth drops open.

"I felt him, Mommy! I felt him kick! But... Does it hurt you?"
