For seventeen years Flure has lived with her mom and her sister, in Ashland, Oregon. Ashland is a city in Jackson County. It lies along Interstate 5, slightly north of the California border and near the south end of the Bear Creek Valley.
Ashland isn't known for much; hardly anything happens out of the ordinary. The most exciting thing in the city is the annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Usually when people, teenagers, graduate from Ashland High School, they are gone for good. Off into the world, away from their boring home to experience more exciting places. But not Flure. Flure wants to live out her life in Ashland.
As soon as Flure graduated high school she began working as a secretary at Dr. Luzi's office; the city's only therapist. On her first day she encounters a rude boy with tan skin and dark hair. And not too long after the first time she meets him, her dreams are flooded with images of a new world, a hidden door, and creatures with wings.
