57. when I grow up

when people asked me what i wanted to be
when i were older
i'd stutter and look away and say
i wanted to be a writer
because i loved reading and paper stories
seemed easier to write than my own.

and because i was young and small and wide eyed
they cooed and smiled.

when people asked me where i wanted to be
when i grew up
i'd sigh and blush and say
i wanted to be away in the country
because i loved forests and mountains and
they seemed better than the city's metal traps

and because i was soft and bright and distracted
they laughed and rolled their eyes.

these days,
when people ask me what i am studying, what i
want to be, where i want to be,
i lie.
you see, the answer haven't changed.
i still want to write and walk forest paths
and find words for every color of the sky seen from the seaside.
but people don't smile anymore when i say so
they frown and mock and correct.

now when they make their inquisitions
they never say 'when you grow older'
they never think to ask 'when you grow stronger'
'when you grow kinder', 'when you grown better'.

age is a number engraved in a door that closes
without ever making a sound.

so today when they ask me what i want to be,
i say
'someone greater'
when they ask me where i want to be i say

'not here'.
