Dear Alex,

You came into the diner today and sat down at one of the stools. I looked up at you, but your head was bowed and you were unmoving. I leaned over the counter to see what you were staring at- but there was nothing there, just your hands folded and your faded blue jeans. I continued attacking the permanent layer of grease covering the counter, and a blush worked its way up my face as I tried to figure out what to say- anything, just to get your attention, to see your cloudy blue eyes, to be swept back to before you left. But you turned and walked out before I could get my tongue to move, the bell over the door dinging behind you.

Alex, why did you come back?

Love,

Carrie
